3M Introduces New Film for TVs at FPD International

3M's Optical Systems Division unveiled its latest optical film solution for LCD TVs at the Flat Panel Display International show in Yokohama, Japan last month. The new film - Vikuiti Dual Brightness Enhancement Film (DBEF) D3-260 - is optimized for LCD TVs up to 40-inches. Like 3M's other DBEF films for TVs, it offers energy savings of up to 32 percent, without sacrificing performance or image quality.

This latest addition to the company's Vikuiti DBEF D3 series increases brightness by recycling polarized light, enhances display viewing angle and uniformity, and also works well with prism films.

"The launch of this new Vikuiti film signals 3M's continued investment in its R&D efforts to expand our optical film portfolio and provide cost-effective solutions that address the growing demand for low-power TVs, without sacrificing performance demands," noted Jim Bauman, vice president of 3M's Optical Systems Division. "3M continues to develop new products that meet today's demand for improved LCD TV image quality and energy efficiency."

New 3M Tapes for Consumer Electronics

Each product in 3M’s newest tape series serves three functions in one – absorbing, shielding and insulating – making the tapes well suited for applications in electronic components and in devices such as mobile handhelds, digital still cameras and LCD TVs. 3M EMI/RFI Absorber and Shielding Tape AB6005 series combines electromagnetic interference/radio frequency interface (EMI/RFI) absorbing and shielding in a single tape. One of the tapes also handles electrostatic discharge (ESD) grounding.

The 3M AB6005 tapes have absorber, shielding and insulating layers integrated in one flexible tape. When the layers are varied in three different constructions, three unique products result as each of the three 3M AB6005 series products performs uniquely different shielding and absorbing functions, isolating and separating EMI and RFI transmitters and receivers.

Building multiple EMI, RFI and ESD performance attributes into a thin tape product that is easily converted into specific shapes changes how electronic products can be designed and problems resolved.
