Measuring Brightness

The measured brightness or luminance of a surface is normally expressed as the number of candelas per square meter. This measure is also referred to as "nits," derived from the Latin verb nitere, meaning to shine.

The following conoscopic plots show the brightness over the entire range of viewing angles generated by a standard display and the increased brightness that can be achieved by including different Vikuiti™ films in the same display. Points in the conoscopic plots around the center indicate the brightness seen when looking directly at a display head-on whereas points away from the center indicate the brightness as seen by looking at a display off-angle - both horizontally and vertically. The false coloration of the conoscopic plot shows high luminance values as red and low luminance values as blue.

Measuring Brightness Comparison

As seen in the plots, Vikuiti™ Brightness Enhancement Film (BEF) takes light and concentrates it for on-angle viewing while Vikuiti Dual Brightness Enhancement Film (DBEF) increases the light reaching the viewer over all viewing angles. Both Vikuiti BEF and Vikuiti DBEF can be used together for the highest increase in display brightness. You can learn more about measuring and increasing display brightness in the Vikuiti online tutorial.
