Novec 1230 Environment

Clean Agent Halon Replacement

From its inception, 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid was designed to address the global demand for a clean agent halon replacement that offers a wide margin of safety, is effective at extinguishing fire hazards and is not targeted for emission reduction, phase-out or phase-down. This next-generation clean agent offers:

  • Zero ozone depletion potential
  • An atmospheric lifetime of 5 days, compared to 65 years for halons
  • A global warming potential of 1 – about the same as naturally-occurring carbon dioxide
Environmental Footprint Comparison Halocarbon Compounds image

In this graphic, the horizontal "X" axis indicates ozone depletion potential, while the vertical "Y" axis shows global warming potential. The diameter of the colored circles represents a product's atmospheric lifetime: the larger the circle, the longer it will reside in the atmosphere. The least possible environmental impact would be indicated by a small dot at the point where the X and Y axes intersect. As shown here, Novec 1230 fluid— with zero ozone depletion potential, a global warming potential of 1 and an atmospheric lifetime of 5 days—comes closest to meeting this ideal.

Because of its unsurpassed environmental profile, Novec 1230 fluid is the first halocarbon halon replacement to offer a viable, long-term sustainable technology for special hazards fire protection.

That's why we say that Novec 1230 fluid was created for life: for the life of your people, to help keep them safe from fire and chemical hazards; for the life of your equipment, to effectively protect it from fire; and for the life of your system. It not only meets today's environmental regulations but also those of the foreseeable future.

Fire protection for green buildings

The LEED® Green Building Rating System™, founded and administered by the United States Green Building Council, is a third-party certification system designed to encourage sustainable building and development practices. Because Novec 1230 fluid enables facilities managers to effect a 99% reduction in greenhouse gases in critical function fire suppression, its use may make it possible to claim LEED Innovation Credits.

For users of HFC-based fire protection systems, the future is uncertain

In recent years, concerns about environmental issues—especially those relating to climate change—have led to increasing regulatory scrutiny of compounds with high global warming potentials (GWPs). These so-called "greenhouse gases" include several conventional halon replacements, such as HFC-227ea and HFC-125.

Under the Kyoto Protocol and other international agreements, more and more industrialized nations have committed to reducing the amount of greenhouse gases released to the atmosphere. Although the use of HFCs in fire protection is allowed today, there is growing concern about their future viability, as regulators look for industries and applications where alternatives exist to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, without harming economic growth.

For example, abatement of HFC materials in fire protection applications is one way companies can reduce their overall emissions from the "basket" of six greenhouse gases identified by the Kyoto Protocol. In addition, many forward-thinking companies are beginning to consider the potential costs of monitoring and reporting their use of greenhouse gases, as well as the cost and disruption to replace an HFC-based system in the future, if new restrictions on HFCs come into force. Ultimately, a growing number of end-users are concluding that long-term economics—as well as good stewardship—favor the use of sustainable technologies, such as 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid.
