For final filtration where there is a requirement to remove yeast and spoilage giving stable wines ready for packaging, it’s important to use a robust filter that can be integrity tested. 3M Purification offer a range of products including LifeASSURE™ BNA containing High Flowing PES Filter Media and 3M™ LifeASSURE™ BA or 3M™ LifeASSURE™ BLA containing Nylon N 6.6 Filter Media.
Our technical specialists are just a phone call way and are trained to understand your needs and therefore can develop an optimized and customised solution specifically for you.
Effective pre-filtration is the first stage in developing a robust wine packaging process. It is important to balance the removal of spoilage against stripping the wine of its character and body. At initial stage efficient low cost depth filtration such as 3M™ HN Series in a traditional filter press starts the removal of high volumes of spoilage organisms such as unwanted proteins, yeasts, bacteria and amorphous solids etc.
are available in a range of industry sizes and media porosities to ensure an effective protection of the more sensitive 3M Purification tubular and lenticular filter cartridges that will be used in the clarification and final filtration stages downstream. They are produced from cellulose, inorganic filter aids and binder resins which make them compatible with the broad range of sanitizing chemicals for repeated hot water regeneration.
If your process requires tubular filter cartridges, 3M Purification recommend 3M™ Betapure™ NT-P Series. This has an unique all propylene highly rigid construction providing high flow rates with greater contamination holding capacity. The rigid construction helps provide a robust structure to withstand the extremes of repeated hot water and chemical sanitisation as is typical in the Wine Industry.
3M Advanced Pleat Technology (APT)
For finer clarification in the early stages, 3M Purification offers you the 3M™ Betafine™ XL Series which are filter cartridges featuring our innovative Advanced Pleat Technology (APT) technology which packages a higher usable surface area in the cartridge. Higher surface areas typically deliver longer life.
As a further offering to the early stages of production 3M Purification also offer 3M™ Betafine™ PBG Series tubular cartridges which again are absolute-rated all polypropylene filters with the enhancement of graded density which can be like having two filters in one.
Lenticular filters such as 3M Purification’s 3M™ Zeta Plus™ HT and MHT Series are an enhancement to traditional filter presses and plate and frame installations. They contain similar media to traditional filter sheets but with the benefit of integral cartridge construction which significantly shortens set-up and changeover times with the added benefit of being used in sealed stainless housings. A sealed housing overcomes the leakage and edge contamination often associated with traditional filter presses. Zeta Plus is a broad range of Lenticular products but the HT formulations are specifically formulated for the filtration of wine and beverages.
3M™ Zeta Plus™ HT filter cartridges are particularly suitable for the clarification of wine with high contaminant content. The media is charge-modified depth construction with graded density offering high mechanical resistance and broad chemical compatibility for regeneration and moreover, they can withstand multiple steaming and hot water sanitisation cycles.
The 3M™ Zeta Plus™ MHT filter cartridges bring the latest innovation of two separate filtration grades combined in one cartridge.
3M Purification 3M™ Zeta Plus™ MHT is unique on the market and delivers true reductions of capital investment, plus lower direct and indirect costs.
Compared to traditional technology this means a reduced loss of wine and less water needed for regeneration.
The early stages of filtration are all designed to ultimately protect and prolong the final most critical filters in the bottling process.
It is the final membrane filters which are fully integrity testable that assure the quality of the wine that finally flows into the bottles.
For this stage 3M Purification offer either 3M™ LifeASSURE™ membrane cartridges or the tighter grades of 3M™ Zeta Plus™ lenticular filter filters.
3M™ LifeASSURE™ BLA, BA and BNA are traditional pleated tubular filters containing benchmark levels of usable surface area. The filter media is either the latest PES or Nylon N 6.6 in both single and graded density formats.
3M™ LifeASSURE™ BLA Series offers an unmatched protection of the 3M™ LifeASSURE™ BA and 3M™ LifeASSURE™ BNA final membrane filters. They can be used in the final filtration stage to allow bacterial reduction.
3M™ LifeASSURE™ BLA Series contain Nylon filter media encompassing APT (Advanced Pleat Technology) construction. It guarantees significant contaminant retention and an increased surface area resulting in an extended service life.
The 3M™ LifeASSURE™ BA Series filters again contain Nylon filter media which has been optimized for wine filtration giving increased productivity. If you are looking for a Nylon Filter media then this cartridge series are the perfect choice for the final stabilisation of wine and sterile filtration.
3M™ LifeASSURE™ BNA Series filters incorporate a highly asymmetric PES membrane which eliminates contaminants in the final filtration stage while retaining the organoleptic characteristics of the wine. This durable and robust design makes it highly resistant to repeated cycles of hot water sanitation and steam sterilisation. Advanced Pleat Technology (APT) construction is again used to significantly increases the useable filtration surface area within the cartridge.
There is an increasing consumer expectation concerning the colour of the wines. An attractive colour is the first indicator that a consumer will see. The current trends are Deep Red, Pale Pink or Golden White.
3M Purification have developed 3M™ Zeta Carbon™ to help you achieve these standards.
Similar in construction and use as our Zeta Plus Products they vary by containing different activated carbons.
The high quality of 3M Purification’s activated carbon and the pore activation technology ensure a filtration with exceptional adsorptive properties. The use of bulk activated carbon optimises the production yields while respecting the essential legal requirements for a safe and healthy workplace (no powdered activated carbon present).
Significant quantities of water are used to produce a bottle of wine.
During the water treatment in the cellar (rinse water of the wine tanks, preparation water for inoculation), it is critical to optimise the viability of the micro-organisms utilised for inoculation (yeasts and bacteria). High quality water is also important to avoid the effects of cork taint.
The primary substances responsible for mouldy tastes in wine, known as cork taint, are chloroanisoles (2, 4, 6-TCA trichloroanisole and 2, 3, 4, 6-TeCA tetrachloroanisole).
The incriminated molecules are primarily TCA essentially originating from cork, TBA originating from polish, treated wood and certain synthetic materials and TeCA which is a contamination caused through contact with certain filtration earths, vats and polluted wooden barrels.
The presence of Chlorine at certain levels within the water used is a contributing factor lowering the quality of the wine and has a detrimental effect on yeasts.
3M™ AP903 Series Filters are a perfect solution to reducing chlorine levels to within acceptable levels. They are a unique easy to use disposable system combining effective sediment retention and high levels of de-chlorination levels.
Incoming city water suppliers and well water often contain insoluble impurities, such as sand, silt and rust which if not removed can cause sedimentation and or precipitations to form in the bottled wine.
Removal of such impurities is critical prior to activities such as bottle washing or equipment rinsing.
Its normal to use a two stage process.
Series are an excellent option for the first stage. They are a low cost tubular depth filter which offers the perfect solution . They are manufactured using the process of extruding polypropylene fibres prior to thermally bonding the fibres together. They contain no binder resins and are of a rigid self supporting construction.
During the final filtration of bottle rinse water you are looking to secure the ultimate stage of your process in order to eliminate all the particle contaminants, even the smallest ones.
3M™ Betapure™ NT-TE Series filters are an excellent option for the finer filtration demands of the final stage of water filtration.
The 3M™ Betapure™ NT-TE cartridge design allows a uniform distribution of the fluid flow and contaminants throughout the entire depth of the medium. This results in a significantly superior service life and a low pressure drop.
