I am a nurse in a busy cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, where the buzzing and humming of many machines often presents a challenge when I am trying to hear lung, heart and belly sounds. In a multicenter clinical study, doctors rated the 3M™ Littmann® Electronic Stethoscope 3000 Series significantly better than traditional, non-electronic stethoscopes when comparing the tone and clarity of heart, lung, blood vessel, and bowel sounds.

Controlled Experiments

Cardiologists missed an S3 gallop 40% MORE OFTEN when using a non-electronic, cardiology-type stethoscope than when using the 3000 Series. Eighty-three percent of cardiologists indicated it was easier to detect/hear an S3 gallop with the 3000 Series than with an acoustic (non-electronic) cardiology-type stethoscope.
Eighty-two percent of cardiologists in a controlled experiment indicated it was easier to detect an aortic regurgitation (Grade 1 or 2) with the 3000 Series than with an acoustic cardiology-type stethoscope of traditional design . In that same experiment, cardiologists missed a Grade 2 aortic regurgitation murmur five times more often with the acoustic stethoscope than they did with the 3000 Series.
In another experiment, 90 percent of critical care nurses, who were asked to identify prerecorded normal and abnormal lung sounds, indicated that it was easier to detect abnormal sounds with the Littmann 3000 Series than with an acoustic cardiology-type stethoscope of traditional design . In that same experiment, critical care nurses misidentified whether a lung sound was normal or abnormal two times more often with the acoustic (non-electronic) stethoscope than they did with the 3000 Series.

191 cardiologists, the overwhelming majority of whom had not previously used the Littmann Electronic Stethoscope 3000 Series, listened to prerecorded heart sounds with and without an S3 gallop of two different magnitudes, presented in random order and in the presence of 70-75 dB ambient noise. They listened with both a 3000 Series and an acoustic (non-electronic) cardiology-type stethoscope.
100 cardiologists listened to prerecorded heart sounds with and without Grade 1 or Grade 2 aortic regurgitation murmurs, presented in random order in the presence of 70-75 dB ambient noise, using a 3M Littmann Electronic Stethoscope 3000 Series and an acoustic (non-electronic) high-end cardiology-type stethoscope.
137 critical care nurses listened to, and were asked to identify, prerecorded normal and abnormal lung sounds (with crackles, wheezes, or rhonchi), presented in the presence of 70-75 dB ambient noise. They listened with both a 3000 Series and an acoustic (non-electronic) high-end cardiology-type stethoscope.
