1970-1979
New Directions

3M introduced a wealth of new products in 1970, including 3M™ Scotchban™ Paper Treatment to protect food packaging and 3M™ Box Sealing Tapes. Riker Laboratories was acquired that same year. In 1971, a new medical products plant opened in Brookings, S.D., and a decorative products plant opened in Nevada, Mo.

3M addressed a growing interest in environmental concerns by introducing its Pollution Prevention Pays (3P) program in 1975. 3M™ Buf-Puf™ Skin Products also debuted in 1975, courtesy of 3M Riker. The introduction of Thinsulate™ Thermal Insulation in 1979 tapped into the expanding outdoor recreation market.
