The Changing of the Guard

The decade began and ended with changes in leadership. Harry Heltzer succeeded Bert Cross as chairman of the board and CEO in 1970. In 1972, the Board of Directors recommended a 2-for-1 stock split. One year later, the first 11 Golden Step team winners were honored. That same year, William L. McKnight retired from the Board of Directors, ending 66 years of service to 3M. 3M also created the first van-pooling program in the United States.

In 1974, Raymond H. Herzog was named CEO to succeed Harry Heltzer. 3M became one of 30 companies included in the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 1976, and in 1977, 3M’s Consumer Products Group was established. 1978 saw the birth of 3M’s red logo and the loss of William L. McKnight, architect and builder of 3M, who died at the age of 90. In 1979, Lewis W. Lehr succeeded Raymond H. Herzog as CEO and became chairman of the board in 1980. The year ended on a high note with 3M sales topping $5 billion.
