1960-1969
Universal Technology

In 1960, 3M™ Micropore™ Surgical Tape, the first hypoallergenic tape was introduced and was a key to the success of 3M’s Health Care business. 1960 also saw the introduction of Scotch® Magic™ Transparent Tape. Football fans rejoiced in 1963 with the debut of Tartan™ Turf, the first synthetic grass surface. 3M developed the first disposable facemasks and respiratory protection products in 1967. The decade ended with a special honor: 3M products were used in the first moonwalk on July 20, 1968. Astronaut Neil Armstrong left his footprints in the lunar dust while wearing boots made from 3M™ Fluorel™ Synthetic Rubber fluoroelastomer products.
