1950-1959
A Global Force
1951 was a year of high points. 3M established its International Division after the dissolution of Durex. International sales reached $20 million in the first year, and new international companies were created in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Mexico and the United Kingdom. 3M then announced its first 4-for-1 stock split.
One year after 3M’s 50th anniversary celebration in 1952, Herb Buetow succeeded Richard Carlton as president. Ground also was broken for the company’s first new corporate headquarters (3M Center) building on a 325-acre site east of St. Paul, Minn.
In 1954, the American Institute of Management named 3M one of the five best-managed companies in the United States and included it among the top 12 growth stocks. Worldwide sales exceeded $500 million.
