New York Stock Exchange Debut

The company focused mainly on the war effort during the first half of the decade. By 1945, more than 2,000 employees were on military leave. Jan. 14, 1946, marked an important event in 3M’s history, its debut on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1947, 3M acquired five companies and formed National Outdoor Advertising. That same year, 40 acres of 3M’s original Crystal Bay mine site were donated to the state of Minnesota for Tettagouche State Park.

The company was organized along divisional lines, and sales topped $100 million in 1948. The decade ended as William L. McKnight became chairman of the board. Richard Carlton was named president and 3M’s employee stock purchase plan was introduced.
