Product Diversification
Many new and different 3M products debuted in the 1930s. Scotch® Cellophane Tape was introduced in 1930. The following year, 3M began producing 3M™ Colorquartz™ Roofing Granules. 3M’s first automotive underseal coating products were introduced in 1935. In 1936, the Adhesives Division was established in Detroit, and the adhesives plant and laboratory opened the same year. Central Research Laboratory was established in 1937 and completed the first successful test of reflective tape coated with glass beads. In 1938, 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Sheeting was introduced commercially. The first traffic sign featuring this new product was erected in Minneapolis one year later.
