Guided by Faith, Tenacity and  Good Sense

In 1904, Lucius Ordway was called upon to assist the struggling young company. Co-owner of Crane and Ordway, a plumbing supply firm in St. Paul, Minn., he was a man of means who liked to take risks. Ordway introduced the concept of patient money – a term that is still used today at 3M to represent long-term investment in an idea, technology or product that shows promise, even when some argue otherwise. Without Ordway’s investment of patient money, 3M would have disappeared before 1910.
