Rankings

  • 3M ranked No. 2 on CareerBliss.com’s 2011 list of “50 Happiest Companies in America.” Using information provided by employees, CareerBliss.com rated companies in categories including growth opportunity, compensation, benefits, work-life balance, career advancement, and job security.
  • Fortune magazine ranked 3M No. 15 on its 2011 list of “50 Most Admired Companies.”
  • Thomson Reuters named 3M among the “2011 Top 100 Global Innovators” based on a series of patent-related metrics. Inclusion on the list confirms an organization’s commitment to progressing innovation globally, protecting ideas and commercializing inventions.
  • 3M was named among the top 50 of “The World’s Most Attractive Employers” in a survey conducted by research firm Universum. More than 160,000 undergraduate business and engineering students worldwide participated in the survey.   
  • 3M ranked No. 16 in the first-ever “Top 25 World’s Best Multinational Workplaces.”  Earlier in the year, 3M Europe set a new record by ranking No. 5 on the 100 Best Workplaces in Europe, which was led by 3M Germany who attained the No. 1 position in the list of German Great Places to Work.
  • 3M came in at No. 10 in the Corporate Reputation and Social Responsibility Rankings (CSR) Index, which ranks the top 50 U.S. companies that consumers distinguish for corporate social responsibility.   
  • 3M ranked third in corporate reputation among 60 of the most visible companies in the U.S. according to the 12th annual Harris Interactive U.S. Reputation Quotient®  Survey. The survey asked 30,000 members of the American general public to rate companies based on their reputation on 20 different attributes.
  • 3M made Inc. Magazine’s list of “Top Nine Company Names.” Other companies on the list include Google and Kodak. 
  • 3M ranked No. 97 on the 2011 Fortune 500 list of the largest companies in the U.S. based on revenue.
  • Ranked by revenue, 3M came in at No. 5 on the Star Tribune 100 listing of the largest publicly held companies with headquarters in Minnesota.
  • 3M ranked No. 4 on the list of "Most Reputable Companies" based on a survey conducted by the Reputation Institute in conjunction with Forbes. The survey asked people about their perceptions of the 150 largest U.S. companies based on revenue.
  • With R&D spending of $1.43 billion over the last four quarters, 3M ranked No. 2 on the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal's list featuring top 25 publicly held companies in Minnesota.
  • 3M was named among the Top 100 Companies to Work For in 2011 by Savoy Magazine. The survey ranked companies based on their management philosophy, communication efforts, career opportunities and diversity outreach efforts, among other factors.
  • 3M ranked sixth on Corporate Responsibility Magazine's list of "100 Best Corporate Citizens," leading a group of seven Minnesota companies on the list, including General Mills Inc., Hormel Corp., Target Corp., Medtronic Inc., Mosaic Co., and Xcel Energy Inc.
  • 3M ranked No. 7 on Barron's list of the "World's Most Respected Companies" (up from No. 15 in 2010).

Recognition

  • 3M was named “2011 Supplier of the Year” by Imark Group, the largest organization of electrical distributors in the U.S. The award recognizes 3M’s commitment to a quality product portfolio and marketing support through training, communication and field sales engagement. This is the second time in three years that Imark conferred the honor on 3M.
  • The American Heart Association named 3M a “Fit-Friendly Company.” The Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Program recognizes employers that champion the health of their employees by creating physical activity programs within the workplace.3M Austin Center in Texas received a 2011 Business Award from the Austin Chamber of Commerce for outstanding health and wellness programs (large business category).  The award recognized 3M Healthy Living Resources and 3M Austin Fitness Center for programs designed to help employees lead a healthier, more active lifestyle. 3M was also honored for its health and fitness staff. 
  • 3M was named winner of the 2011 World Technology Award in the Materials (Corporate) category.  Winners are selected by members of the World Technology Network for doing the innovative work of “the greatest likely long-term significance.”
  • 3M received the Freedom Award, the highest recognition given by the U.S. Department of Defense to companies that provide “exceptional support” to their employees serving in the National Guard and Reserve.
  • 3M's law department was named winner of the 2011 Employer of Choice Award for the Midwest region by the Minority Corporate Counsel Association. Of 3M's 92 lawyers, 46 are women or minorities.
  • 3M was awarded the 2011 Member of the Year Award from the Institute of Corporate Productivity (i4cp). The award is presented to member companies that demonstrate unique and successful programs to increase workforce productivity within their organization.

Sustainability

  • 3M received the “2011 Excellence in Partnership Award” from the U.S. General Services Administration. The award recognizes companies that demonstrate exceptional commitment to the environment through the use of environmentally friendly products/services or adhering to environmentally friendly manufacturing/operating procedures.
  • Duquesne University’s Beard Institute granted 3M the “Green to Gold Award” for demonstrating commercial success in sustainable business practices.
    3M was named one of the top three companies in the category “Germany’s Most Sustainable Strategies for the Future (Concern)” at the German Sustainability Awards ceremony. 3M was recognized for its achievements in combining economic success with social responsibility and environmental awareness.
  • 3M was named among the 100 greenest U.S. companies on Newsweek’s annual “Green Rankings” of the 500 largest public U.S. companies. 3M ranked No. 85. 
  • 3M was selected as a member of the 2011/2012 Dow Jones Sustainability Index, a global stock index that recognizes and tracks the performance of leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. 3M was one of only four diversified industrial companies selected and led the sector in the following key dimensions: Corporate Governance, Innovation Management, Operational Eco-Efficiency, Water-Related Risk Management and Human Capital Development.
  • 3M ranked No. 2 on Interbrand’s 2011 list of “Best Global Green Brands.”  Brand consultancy Interbrand commended 3M for adopting an environmental policy in 1975, for offering more green solutions to customers, and for its corporate citizenship and award-winning energy management program. The study assessed brands by both consumer perception and environmental performance.
  • For a record-setting seventh consecutive year, 3M received the ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy for its comprehensive worldwide energy conservation efforts. 3M was named ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year in 2004 and was recognized again from 2005 to 2011 with the ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award.
  • 3M Austin's Research Boulevard plant ranked 52nd on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's "Fortune 500 Green Power Partnerships" list. The ranking highlights the annual green power purchases of leading U.S. organizations. Sixteen percent of 3M Austin's total electricity use comes from green power, specifically biogas and wind.

  • 3M India Limited ranked No. 275 in the 2011 “Compendium of Golden 400 Large-Cap Companies” compiled by the Dalal Street Investment Journal.
  • 3M Germany was honored with the “German Human Resources Award” from Personalwirtschaft magazine for its holistic “Build on Strengths” concept and sustainable human resources strategy.  
  • 3M India Limited ranked 189th in Business Today magazine’s listing of “India’s Most Valuable Top-500 Companies” based on average market capitalization for April-September 2011.
  • 3M is among the most desirable employers in Singapore according to JobCentral Group’s online survey of undergraduates. 3M ranked No. 3 among private employers, following Apple and Google.
  • 3M received the “Best Innovator” award in Germany for its best-in-class innovation management and corporate venturing. The award honors3M for the unique way it identifies innovative start-ups and entrepreneurs with game-changing technologies and novel business models. The award is given under the patronage of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology every year by consulting firm A.T. Kearney and Wirtschaftswoche magazine and recognizes the best innovators in nine industry sectors.

  • Recognized as one of the most technologically significant products introduced in the past year, 3M™ Twin Axial Ribbon Cable SL8800 Series solution received R&D Magazine’s 2011 R&D 100 Award. 3M Twin Axial Cable solutions are the electronic industry’s first known flat, foldable and longitudinally shielded high-performance twin axial ribbon cables.
  • 3M’s landmark Cubitron™ II abrasives technology platform won the TechAmerica Foundation’s American Technology Award in the manufacturing category. The award is presented annually to signify American industry’s best technological achievements in 14 categories. Cubitron II represents a cutting and grinding breakthrough that raises productivity, lowers costs and improves safety.
  • 3M won two Edison awards for "2011 Best New Products." 3M™ Filtrete™ Water Station won the Silver award in the Consumer Packaged Goods--Household category. 3M™ Integrated Cycler won the Bronze award in the Science & Medical—Diagnostics Aids category.
  • 3M™ Sun Control Window Films were named a 2011 Top Products Award Winner by Building Operating Management Magazine. The award recognizes the most popular manufacturers and suppliers of the year as determined by building and facility executives who participated in a national survey.
