  • Based on 2008 annual revenue, 3M ranked 17th in the 2009 Consumer Goods Registry's listing of the 100 top-performing consumer goods companies.
  • 3M ranked 16th in the world and 10th in North America on Fortune magazine's 2009 "World's Best Companies for Leaders" list.
  • 3M ranked 40th in Newsweek magazine's "Green Rankings," an environmental ranking of America's 500 largest companies. The Green Rankings are based on a company's environmental impact, policies, performance, and reputation. 3M's rank puts it in the top 10 percent of U.S. companies.

  • 3M Performance Label Materials received the 2009 Environmental Leadership Award from the Tag and Label Manufacturers Institutes (TLMI).   • The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) continues to recognize 3M as a sustainability leader by including the company in its 2009-2010 global sustainability index. 3M is included in the DJSI's Diversified Industrials sector and received top marks for its work around innovation, environmental reporting, labor practices, and human capital development.
  • 3M Optical Systems Division received the Alliance to Save Energy's "Innovative Star of Energy Efficiency" Award for its Vikuiti™ Dual Brightness Enhancement Films (DBEF) for LCD TVs and monitors. The Innovative Star award recognizes an emerging technology or service that has the potential to transform a sector of the energy efficiency market. The 3M DBEF Film, a reflective polarizer, enables energy savings of up to 32 percent for LCD TVs and 30 percent for monitors.
  • Dr. Sumita Mitra received the 2009 ACS Heroes of Chemistry Award from the American Chemical Society for the development of 3M™ Filtek™ Supreme Universal Restorative and for her world-class research and contributions in the field of dental materials, including resin-modified glass ionomers, adhesives and nanotechnology-based dental materials. This is the third time that 3M scientists have been recognized with the award. Past awardees include teams responsible for developing 3M hydrofluoroethers (HFEs) (1997) and Aldara™ (imiquimod) cream 5% (2004).
  • 3M Health Care was awarded the 2009 GHX Best in Class Award for achieving the highest year-over-year market share growth for distributed products in the Sterilization product category for 2008. 3M Health Care was among 30 leading medical-surgical product manufacturers recognized by GHX in five market segments. Winners were determined using GHX Market Intelligence reports, which analyze national distributed sales transaction data.
  • 3M Carlton Society member Dr. Carl Stinson Miller was posthumously inducted into the Minnesota Inventor's Hall of Fame for inventing the world's first easy-to-use, dry copy copier, the Thermo-Fax Duplicating Machine. His machine, commercially introduced in 1950, made carbon paper virtually obsolete and helped create the modern copying industry.
  • In recognition of its commitment to sustainability, 3M has been selected for inclusion in the 2008/09 Dow Jones Sustainability Index that tracks the performance of sustainability-driven companies worldwide. 3M has been included in the index every year since its inception in 1999.
  • 3M is one of just seven mid- and large-cap companies highlighted in an updated April 15, 2009, article titled, "These Companies Will Get Better in a Recession," on The Motley Fool Web site (www.fool.com). According to the article, "Even recessions can be blessings in disguise for strong, well-run businesses — but it takes some time for these blessings to become apparent. And that's why it's important to identify now the companies that will likely enjoy these advantages going forward."
  • 3M received the 2009 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy for continuous improvement in energy management. 3M has earned recognition from ENERGY STAR for the sixth year running-- the only company to do so in the industrial category. 3M was named ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year in 2004 and was recognized again in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 with ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Awards.
  • 3M scientist George Moore was chosen to receive the Minnesota Award of the American Chemical Society's Minnesota Section. Moore was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the chemical sciences. His publications, patents and contribution to innovative 3M products, including synthesis of the first COX-2 inhibitor, testified to his record scientific achievement.
  • 3M Corporate Scientist Dr. George Moore received the 2009 American Chemical Society Industrial Chemistry Award for his work in fluoromaterials research. With 122 patents, Dr. Moore holds the second-largest number of patents among scientists at 3M.

  • 3M was awarded the U.K.'s Carbon Trust Standard for taking action on climate change by reducing the carbon footprint of its U.K. operations. The Carbon Trust Standard is the world's first carbon award that requires an organization to measure, manage and reduce its carbon footprint and make real reductions year after year.

  • 3M Health Care Clitheroe won the 2009 Manufacturing Excellence Award, one of the United Kingdom's most prestigious business awards. The site was chosen in the "people effectiveness" category of the award, which is organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). Winning factors included the site's training and development program and how the site engages employees and the local community.
    3M U.K. facilities have amassed health and safety awards from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) this year. The awards reward companies whose daily contributions keep employees safe and healthy. Awards and recipients include:
