3M Drug Delivery Systems Launches Integrated Dose by Dose Counter
3M DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEMS TO LAUNCH
INTEGRATED DOSE BY DOSE COUNTER
AT RDD, PARIS IN APRIL 2007
April 17, 2007; 3M Drug Delivery Systems is set to launch it’s latest inhalation technology at the forthcoming Respiratory Drug Delivery (RDD) conference in Paris – the new 3M ™ Integrated Dose by Dose Counter.
As global leaders in pulmonary drug delivery, 3M will reaffirm its position as front runners in expertise and innovation as it launches the new technology, delivering a precise, dose by dose counting and display solution for pressurised Metered Dose Inhaler (pMDI) development.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued guidance stating that either dose counters or indicator mechanisms are to be integrated into pMDI devices. As a result, significant interest and activity has been placed in this area by many key pharmaceutical and drug delivery companies taking on board that dose counters should provide, either through a direct numeric count or colour coding, a clear indication of when a pMDI is approaching the end of its recommended number of actuations.
The 3M ™ Integrated Dose by Dose Counter boasts significant advantages including an ergonomic and robust design that has been integrated into the actuator for accurate dose by dose counting and display. In addition, the 3M ™ Integrated Dose by Dose Counter has been tested with key patient groups, including children and geriatrics, to develop a design that retains familiarity for patients, whilst minimising development risks and ensuring compatibility with packaging lines.
Louise Righton, Global Inhalation Market Development Manager, 3M Drug Delivery Systems said: “We are extremely excited about the impending launch. Since the introduction of the pressurised metered dose inhaler (pMDI) over 50 years ago, we have been driving technology forward and this new dose counter helps to reinforce our strong position in the market place. For precise dose by dose counting and display patients praise the new 3M ™ Integrated Dose by Dose Counter. Our partners appreciate our capability to integrate the dose counter into their product development, provide necessary regulatory documentation and help bring products to market faster.
3M Drug Delivery Systems will also be hosting a series of workshops at RDD. The workshops will focus on meeting the needs of the industry, patients and regulatory bodies when introducing new dose counter technology. Patient research findings will be shared with the groups, demonstrating the most important patient needs that should be taken into consideration for dose counter developments.
Righton commented: “We are delighted to be running these workshops at RDD as they create a forum for delegates to engage in two-way discussions regarding dose counter technology. In addition to the workshops, we will be presenting two posters, one of which is titled ‘Retrofitting of dose counters to pMDI’s’, presented by Graham Purkins.”
