3M Stock Image Licensing Process

There are two approved options for acquiring new imagery to support the 3M's Brand Identity Strategy:

  1. Shooting original photography (not always as expensive as you may think!);
  2. Licensing stock imagery from approved suppliers using the new 3M Stock Image Licensing Process.

Shooting and Using Authentic 3M Owned Imagery (always preferred!)
To best portray 3M with authenticity, there is no substitute for original 3M-owned imagery. In the long run, shooting and building a library of 3M images featuring our own people, products, places and patterns saves 3M communicators tremendous amounts of time and money. It is also a much safer option in terms of avoided legal risk, e.g., mishandling stock imagery.

Since 2007, several 3M businesses have partnered with the 3M Brand Identity team to shoot original people and patterns photography. These images are available for all 3M businesses globally to use free of charge and with no limitations. Go to Celum Synergy > Asset Location > 3M Brand Identity Catalog > Image Library > People, Product, Pattern.

Licensing Stock Imagery
While using or shooting original 3M imagery is always preferred, these options are not always viable or practical. In some cases, it is necessary to license stock imagery. It is important, however, that when doing so, appropriate procedures are adhered to.

Using the 3M Stock Image Licensing Process will not only provide you with access to high quality imagery from world-renown providers - e.g., Getty, Punchstock and Jupiter -  but also save you time, money and ensure that these assets are stored, documented and shared on the DMR appropriately.

You can find the 3M Stock Image Licensing Process under the Standards & Policies section of the Marketing Communications Resource Center on 3M Source.

There you will also have access to imagery that has already been licensed to 3M!
