Chain Reaction and Handwritten Graphics

Chain Reaction Graphics

Graphics conveying the chain reaction of new ideas can be used to visually express how at 3M, one idea leads to another. Chain reaction graphics serve as a subtle background design element, rather than competing with the 3M montage design. They key is that they are present, but discreet—not overpowering. Chain reaction graphics should only be used to augment, never replace, other imagery and messaging in a 3M montage. You are not required to use chain reaction graphics on every 3M montage. The examples below demonstrate some of the ways chain reaction graphics can be used to enhance your design.

Standards

  1.  Chain reaction graphics are intentionally cropped, showing only a portion of the full image.
  2. Graphics should be transparent white, black or a complementary color, positioned within, or
  3. extending slightly beyond the 3M montage field.
  4. You can download both versions of chain reaction graphics shown above from the 3M DMR, or
  5. create your own.
  6. Contact the 3M Brand Identity and Design team for help developing chain reaction graphics.

Handwritten Graphics

Handwritten graphics can be used to generate curiosity, making the viewer feel like they have an “inside look” at our culture of collaboration, to see how we come up with solutions. Portions of formulas, diagrams or words should be cropped or positioned so they are recognizable, but not perfectly readable, inviting audiences to want to know more. Handwritten graphics should only be used to augment, never replace, other imagery and messaging in a 3M montage. You are not required to use handwritten graphics on every 3M montage. The examples below demonstrate some of the ways handwritten graphics can be used to enhance your design.

Standards

  1. Handwritten graphics should be transparent white if contained within the 3M montage, or transparent black if extending slightly beyond the 3M montage.
  2. Graphics can be positioned horizontally, vertically or diagonally, but should always be connected to the 3M montage field.
  3. Handwritten graphics may not be used as montage messaging, headlines, subheads or other copy.
  4. Handwriting should be loose and natural, demonstrating creative energy.
  5. Contact the 3M Brand Identity and Design team for help developing handwritten graphics.
