Grids & Templates
Literature, newsletters, promotions, Web pages and other applications generally include a variety of visual elements: logos, body copy, headlines, photos, pull quotes, etc. Grids are invisible lines, or guides, used to organize these elements within a layout, providing consistency across all communications. Templates are design files with grid lines and other pre-formatted specifications used to design a variety of communications, primarily literature.
The 3M brand identity system was developed using a very specific grid system. Each application includes a defined area on the grid for the montage field, as well as specific placement for the 3M logo, text, imagery and other design elements. This system provides consistent expression of the 3M brand, yet allows for differentiation of individual business or product brands.
To maintain consistency across all communications, regardless of size, orientation or format, follow the grids specific to each application. Grids have been defined for literature covers, inside spreads, back pages, presentation title and text slides, advertisements, and more. Many of these grids are available within the Download area.
