Shipping containers, by definition, are designed to package, store, and transport a wide variety of products.  Generally, other levels of packaging may exist, but the shipping container will always be classified as the outmost level of packaging.  In addition to minimizing direct access to the product, providing protection to the product, and enabling the handling of the product throughout the supply chain, these containers are also used to communicate very specific pieces of information related to the contents within the shipper container.

In today’s global, multilingual marketplace, properly identifying 3M products is critical for our internal shipping systems, logistics organization, and essential to our channel partners and customers.  As such, a policy was developed to establish a comprehensive set of requirements associated with the marking and labeling of 3M finished goods packaging at the shipping container level.

Compliance to the policy provides great benefit to 3M by:

  • Reducing risks associated with non-compliance to legal, regulatory, customs and/or other requirements,
  • Allowing for faster, more accurate distribution of 3M products,
  • Enabling reliable identification of 3M products,
  • Enabling standardization of label materials, sizes, styles, and design layouts,

  • Enhancing brand awareness, earning customer loyalty, and building brand equity, and
  • Supporting the implementation of on-demand printing solutions.
