Product Identification

Information placed on products helps customers use them safely and efficiently, creating a positive brand experience. This information is usually displayed on the product label and can include product benefits, instructions for use and safety hazards. Guidelines for applying this information to labels are discussed in detail in the Packaging and Labeling section of this Web site.

Applying the 3M logo

To maintain global recognition of 3M products, the 3M logo and other identity elements should be applied to products according to the following guidelines.

Logo control space

Wherever the 3M logo is used, clear space equal to half the size of the “M” must be maintained around the logo.

Position the product name below the 3M logo in the upper left corner of the product. For more information refer to the Branded Relationship section.

The 3M logo may be used in a raised or recessed form. Use the surface-depth formulas below as guidelines. The goal is to minimize visual distortion that may result from logos that are recessed too deeply or raised too high.

When molded or stamped into a product, the logo should be the same color as the product material. Be sure the molding or stamping process does not compromise the quality of the logo.

Applied graphics

Applied graphics are labels or printed graphics that are applied to the product, usually containing the logo and brand name. Whenever practical, place these applied graphics in the upper or lower left corner of the product’s primary viewing surface, which is generally the front of the product.
