African American Society
The African American Society increases 3M employees’ awareness and understanding of African American culture, and provides a forum for members to enhance their interpersonal and professional skills.
Group activities
The African American Society provides a professional and social network for people of African descent. The group annually celebrates Black History Month and other important dates. The annual cook-out for members is a highlight. In addition to monthly informal luncheons, members enjoy social networking after work with other affinity groups. Members also reach out to and recognize African American interns working at 3M.
How we make a difference
This active group brings professional and personal growth opportunities to members through an Executive Speaker Series and presentations on finance, recruiting and retention, and other topics. Many members volunteer in the community and at local schools where they mentor students and share their work experience to interest students in future careers.

Having started at 3M as a temporary employee, I was able to see and experience first-hand 3M’s commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive work experience. At 3M, all employees are valued, respected and encouraged to grow. This was an important decision making factor for me to pursue and obtain permanent employment at 3M.
Growth and development
I like that 3M encourages and provides many opportunities for growth within and outside the company. I have a degree in Corporate Diversity Management and Development. And right now I am completing a dual master’s degree program at Hamline University in Business Administration and Public Administration.
Double networks
As the new chair of the African American Society, I have the opportunity for further growth and development. Through the society, I can contribute to making a difference on many fronts and be a champion for diversity inclusion. I belong to both the African American Society and Women’s Leadership Network. Both are excellent means of networking with a vast array of people at 3M. The Women’s Leadership Network provides a fellowship of women for me. I am learning from other women’s unique career paths as I pursue my life goals.
