CD and DVD collections are growing in libraries today, creating an even more critical need to protect them from loss. A recent review of various news sources shows that CD/DVD theft is on the rise. A November 2000 article stated that 900 CDs and DVDs from one library were found in a retail store. Other reports state that hundreds of thousands of discs are being stolen throughout the United States. Yet of 402 libraries surveyed by Library Journal in late 2005, 29 percent of those libraries take no special measures to protect their DVD collection from loss. Protective or locked cases provide a solution for 37 percent of the libraries surveyed; 25 percent of the respondents display only the CD/DVD cases and 7 percent use security strips. Also, it appears that there is not a one-size-fits-all solution to library CD/DVD theft.

Red Tag Disc Protection System

3M has formed a strategic alliance with AGI Polymatrix, a world leader in CD and DVD media packaging, to help the library industry address the issue of shrinking disc media collections. The Red Tag system is simple to implement and works in conjunction with Red Tag CD and DVD cases. The red tag inserted into the media case locks the disc onto the case and locks the case closed. Only the special unlocking device can quickly and easily remove the red tag and free the disc for patrons. For maximum security, 3M DCD-2 electromagnetic security strips can be incorporated into the system and RFID tags can be used to facilitate self-service.
