Penguin Group (USA) Launches Library Lending Pilot Program Penguin partners with New York Public Library and 3M to make Penguin eBooks available to library patrons

June 2012

NEW YORK – June 21, 2012 – Penguin Group (USA), The New York Public Library, and 3M today announced a pilot project that will make Penguin eBooks available to patrons of both The New York Public Library and the Brooklyn Public Library. The pilot program will begin in August and, if successful, could be rolled out across the US.

Under the initial phase of the pilot, eBooks will be made available to libraries for one-year with renewable terms. Library patrons will be able to access eBooks remotely utilizing public-library compatible reading devices. Titles will be available for lending six months after initial publication. David Shanks, Penguin Group (USA) CEO said, "We have always been committed to libraries and we are hopeful that this experiment will be successful. Our partnership with 3M and the New York Public Library is a first step toward understanding the best means of supporting the growing digital missions of our great library institutions and their sincere desire to bring writers to new readers. Penguin has a long history of broadening access to good quality literature beginning with our founder Allen Lane, who popularized paperbacks in the 1930s. Bringing writers to readers is what we do."

Anthony Marx, New York Public Library President, said, ""We are delighted to partner with Penguin and 3M in this historic agreement, which is a powerful first step toward libraries and publishers working together to build a model that meets the needs of our ever-changing society. Since our founding in 1895, The New York Public Library has made it our mission to provide free books and educational materials for all, particularly for those of limited means. As eBooks grow in popularity, libraries nationwide have faced diminishing access to that content. As such, the Library is determined to work together with publishers and authors to craft a fair way to ensure eBooks are available to libraries and their users."

"We are delighted to be collaborating with Penguin and the New York Public Library in order to find an eBook lending model that works for all sides," said Matt Tempelis, global business manager, 3M Cloud Library. "The 3M team is dedicated to bringing the best content to our library partners in ways that work for both the libraries and publishers. This is a great step in that direction."

We are excited to partner with Penguin Group (USA) to make their eBooks available to our patrons. Brooklyn Public Library’s eContent collection currently offers more than 28,000 titles, and in the past fiscal year, we have tripled our eBook acquisitions budget," said Linda E. Johnson, President and CEO of Brooklyn Public Library. "This new partnership will enable us to significantly increase the number of eBooks in our collection and will make it possible for patrons to access Penguin’s titles in the format that best suits them."

Innovations Continue for 3M Cloud Library

January 19, 2012

St. Paul, MN – January 19, 2012 – 3M Library Systems will showcase continuing innovations in its 3M Cloud Library eBook Lending Service at the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting beginning January 20. With word spreading through the library community about the system’s ease of use and growing list of offerings, ALA attendees will be able to see for themselves the unique turnkey system of digital content, in-library hardware, and apps for borrowing and reading.

Visitors to the 3M booth will be able to see a demonstration of the new 3M Cloud Library app, 3M Discovery Terminals and 3M eReaders, which are in use by patrons of several of the system’s current beta sites, including the St. Paul Public Library, Kansas Digital Library Consortium, and the Mobile Public Library of Alabama. The app is currently available on Android and iOS platforms.

Beta site users are now discovering the 3M Cloud Library’s outstanding ease of use, as 3M has created a user friendly way to install and start using its app. By eliminating the need for an Adobe ID, 3M allows patrons to simply install the app, select their library, and enter their library card number, after which they can browse the system, check out and read books. The 3M Cloud Library doesn’t ask for detailed information from patrons such as name, email address or a new password like many competitive systems require. All that is needed is valid library card number in good standing.

3M supports the philosophy that libraries should own their content after purchase. By working with the State Library of Kansas to help transfer content from their previous eBook provider, 3M is discovering publishers that support that philosophy as well. As a digital distributor of content, 3M has designed the Cloud Library system to support library eBook license ownership after the sale. Additionally, if a customer wishes to terminate their relationship with 3M and move to a new platform provider, 3M will not restrict the library from transferring their eBook licenses to a new platform.

"Our stance is that ownership of e-content should not be treated any differently than physical content,"said Kansas state librarian Joanne Budler. "We are excited to transition to the 3M Cloud Library, which supports us in this philosophy and will be a valuable partner as we continue building our digital collection."

Another way 3M is making digital lending easier for librarians is by eliminating the need for a lengthy multi-year service agreement. 3M’s newly released terms and conditions agreement allows customers to renew their subscription from year to year without committing to a long term contract.

"We feel that if a customer is unsatisfied with our system, they should be free to move to a different platform. Our commitment to customer satisfaction and continuous improvement means we don’t have to lock people into our system – they’ll want to stay,"says Tom Mercer, 3M digital library marketing manager.

Additionally at ALA, the 3M Cloud Library will showcase new publishing agreements. The growing list of collaborating publishers now includes Harlequin Publishing, Berret Koehler, Creative Content Digital, Holiday House, Kensington, McFarland Publishers, Paradigm, University of Mississippi Press, F+W Media, Quayside, Skyhorse, Loyola Press, Gibbs-Smith, Naxos, and Baker Publishing. These new agreements now bring content from more than 40 publishers, providing well over 100,000 titles to the eBook Lending Service.

3M Library Systems will be located at booth 2239 at the ALA Midwinter Meeting. For more information about the 3M Cloud Library, visit 3M.com/cloud.

3M Cloud Library Comes to Glendale and Pasadena Public Libraries

June 21, 2012

St. Paul, MN – The 3M Cloud Library eBook Lending Service continues to successfully roll-out in libraries across the nation, and will be introduced to patrons at the Glendale and Pasadena Public Libraries today at launch events just prior to tomorrow’s American Library Association Annual Conference opening in Anaheim, Calif. The public and media are invited to experience the revolutionary lending service at open house events from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Pasadena Central Library and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Glendale Central Library.

"We have heard a great deal of positive feedback about the 3M Cloud Library from other beta sites, and we’re extremely excited about the installation," said Glendale Library Arts & Culture Director Cindy Cleary. "This system will allow us to offer patrons the latest in eBook lending technology, and the best part is that anyone can benefit from this system, not just those who already own an eReading device."

The 3M Cloud Library offers a turnkey system of digital content, in-library hardware, and apps for borrowing and reading. At today’s open houses, attendees will be able to test drive the system, which uses several components to allow users to browse the electronic catalog and read on the device of their choice:

  • • 3M Discovery Terminals: Patrons at the library can browse the catalog on these electronic kiosks with an intuitive touch-based interface.
  • • 3M eReaders: Content from the Cloud Library can be synced with easy-to-use 3M eReaders that can be checked out like any other lendable materials at several branches of the Glendale and Pasadena public libraries.
  • • Mobile device compatibility: The service’s eBooks are compatible with PCs, Macs, iPads, Nooks, and Androids. Using their personal devices, patrons can browse, check out and read eBooks all without leaving the 3M Cloud Library app.

"With 3M’s solid history in the library community and their commitment to customer service, the decision to move forward with the 3M Cloud Library was absolutely the best choice for our libraries," said Jan Sanders, director of the Pasadena Public Library. "This system offers our patrons the opportunity to access our eBooks from anywhere, and it allows them to do so with unprecedented ease and speed."

Along with the Glendale and Pasadena Public Libraries, a number of other libraries across the country have now made the 3M Cloud Library available to patrons, including St. Paul Public Library, Minn.; Richland County Public Library, S.C.; Addison Public Library, Ill.; Douglas County Libraries, Colo.; Darien Library, Conn.; Richland County Public Library, S.C.; Mobile Public Library, Ala. and the State Library of Kansas on behalf of the Kansas Digital Library Consortium. 3M continues to seek feedback from both patrons and staff at these locations on the service’s ease of use and functionality, using their input to refine the system.

An exciting 2011 leads to a growing 2012 for 3M Library Systems

January, 2011

3M Library Systems continues to innovate and drive forward with new products like the 3M Cloud Library and continues to help libraries gain productivity and efficiencies with a growing community of libraries purchasing 3M RFID and 3M Automated Materials Handling (AMH).

3M’s AMH business is rapidly growing, having sold over 100 systems in the last two years. These systems provide increased productivity and reduced materials handling for busy libraries.

Recent AMH Installations: Jacksonville, FL, Johnson County, KS, Louisville, CO, Poudre River, CO, Mesa, AZ, Howard County (ongoing installation), MD, Colleyville, TX, and many more!

Despite tough economic challenges, libraries continue to invest in 3M RFID to help improve productivity, and provide better customer service. While the industry continues to consolidate, 3M is continuing to invest in libraries. 3M is making it easier to utilize RFID by developing simple upgrade kits and also helping early RFID adopters migrate from proprietary systems to 3M’s open ISO architecture.

Recent RFID Installations: Dakota County, MN, Washington County, OR, Elgin Community College, IL, Dixie State College, UT, Kyle, TX, Denton, TX, Skokie, IL, Peninsula Library System (with more than 40 locations) CA, Vigo County, IN, Herrick, MI, Muskegon, MI, Cheshire, CT, Boyd, TN, Alabama State University, AL, Santa Clara, CA, Spring Lake, MI, Elmhurst, IL, South Lake TX, and many more!

After a hugely successful introduction of the 3M Cloud Library, 3M has launched the Cloud Library in all ten beta accounts and will be ready for sales in late first quarter. Rethinking the way library customers access e-content and making it quick and easy for patrons to read their eBooks at home, on the go, or in the library with two simple clicks is exciting! 2011 Beta accounts: St. Paul, MN, Kansas, MO, Johnson County, KS, Darien, CT, Richland County, SC, Mobile, AL, Pasadena/Glendale, CA, Douglas County, CO, Prince William County, VA, and Baltimore County, MD.
