U.S. Community Giving Priorities


In the United States, 3M and the 3M Foundation organize corporate giving around four key areas, Environmental, Education, Arts & Culture, Health and Human Services Giving. The giving emphasis in these areas are as follows:

Environmental Giving

3M’s commitment to environmental progress extends beyond our doors to support environmental initiatives by others in 3M communities. 3M and the 3M Foundation provide contributions to programs that promote the sustainability of the Earth’s ecosystems.

  • Preserve biodiversity.

  • Limit climate change.

  • Provide access to natural areas.

  • Offer opportunities for volunteers.

Education Giving
Our support to education prepares students from elementary through graduate school for success in school and after.  We support initiatives that inspire innovation, excellence and inclusiveness in teaching and learning.

  • Focus on science, math, & economics.

  • Advance teaching and learning at schools known for academic excellence in the sciences, engineering and business.

  • Increase participation by underrepresented groups in these disciplines.

  • Link with K-12 Education initiatives to prepare students for college and develop current and future teachers.

  • Link with K-12 Education initiatives to prepare students for post secondary success and professional development.

Arts & Culture Giving
3M’s support to arts and culture helps open minds to the world around us, leading the way to creativity, new understanding and insights.

  • Encourage arts organizations with strong education and community outreach programs.

  • Promote artistic and cultural diversity.

  • Support premier arts organizations in 3M communities.

Health & Human Services Giving
3M’s commitment to service begins with our neighbors and extends around the world in times of disaster.  We use our resources to help bring people, organizations and ideas together, creating brighter futures in 3M communities.

Youth Development (Ages 0-21)

  • Support prevention initiatives and selective intervention programs.

  • Promote early childhood development through parent engagement and school readiness.

  • Humanitarian and disaster relief.

  • After school programs with a learning component.

Community/Volunteer Giving
3M’s support of community / volunteer giving includes 3M Volunteer Match, programs that recognize 3M Volunteers, and local community affairs budgets for 3M plant locations and civic activities.
