3M Scientists Develop Hydrofluoroethers for Precision Cleaning and Other Uses - 3M™ Novec™ Engineered Fluids are a new, low Global Warming Potential (GWP) class of materials developed by 3M scientists in the mid-1990s as replacement fluids for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). Today they are also being used to replace hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and chlorinated and brominated materials for precision cleaning, thermal management, lubricant deposition and more.
