06.19.06 - Dyneon Recognized by SAE for Environmental Excellence
OAKDALE, MN (June 19, 2006) – Dyneon, one of the world’s leading fluoropolymer producers, has been named first runner-up in the prestigious Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Environmental Excellence in Transportation (E2T) competition for Material Development and Application. The award acknowledges Dyneon's substantial contribution to environmental stewardship with the development of THV Barrier Fuel Hose technology, which can significantly reduce fuel vapor losses from motor vehicles.
According to Mark G. Geis, Dyneon Transportation Market Manager, Fluoroplastic Business, this proprietary thermoplastic fuel hose material can cut evaporative emissions to one-tenth of one percent of that lost by traditional nitrile rubber hose, and to six-tenths of one percent of that emitted by a comparable segment of fluoroelastomer-lined hose.
“A conservative calculation based on vehicles sold since the first evaporative emission standards were implemented in 1995 reveals that THV Barrier Fuel Hoses have reduced hydrocarbon emission in the U.S. alone by more than 25,000 metric tons,” said Geis. “Manufacturers are using this technology in the U.S. and in Canada, Europe, Japan, Korea, China, and Russia; where there are also evaporative emission standards.”
Dyneon anticipates that the more stringent state and federal regulations scheduled to take effect in the U.S. for small engines, motorcycles, marine and recreational vehicles engines by 2008 will result in expanded demand for THV Barrier Fuel Hose technology, with further environmental benefit.
Dyneon LLC, a 3M company, is one of the world’s leading fluoropolymer producers with operations or representation in more than 50 countries. Headquartered in Oakdale, Minn., the company employs more than 800 people worldwide.
