Thermoplastic elastomers offer designers and end-users numerous alternatives to natural rubber and thermosetting rubbers. thermoplastic elastomers are performance engineered to be easily fabricated by injection molding or extrusion, and are available in a variety of base polymer systems, to include polyolefins, polystyrene copolymers and polyurethanes
These base materials make it possible to formulate a broad property spectrum in both clear and opaque formulations. Some grades are made specifically for prolonged outdoor use, whereas others are made with performance balanced with low cost. They are easily processed and can be supplied with specific additive packages. They can also be used as the base polymer for specific concentrates, e.g., colors, lubricants, antistats, etc.
Applications for TPEs include soft touch surfaces for tools, tooth brushes, shaving razors, hair brushes, mouse pads, caps for containers, shoe liners, and various automotive needs, particularly flexible molding applications around windows and doors. The use of TPEs has broad application in place of plasticized PVC film and sheet for cladding various assemblies. Colored versions can be easily provided as well as fragrance-containing products.
TPE's are available in clear formulations from Shore 10A to 95A and can be uv stabilized.
Opaque types of TPEs are listed in table II to provide beginning data for custom manufacture of specified grades by our customers.
