Your First Appointment
You've made the decision to get braces and now it's on to your first appointment. Here's a general overview of some of the things you can expect.
The Consult
Before your first appointment, you may have a free consultation with your orthodontist. It is helpful to bring any x-rays you have from your dentist if you can. Your orthodontist will evaluate your teeth and make treatment recommendations. This is the time to ask all of your questions.
Before Treatment
Have your teeth professionally cleaned.
If you have sensitive teeth, or wish to whiten your teeth before treatment, talk with your orthodontist about appropriate products and procedures. If you have any periodontal problems, need teeth extracted, or need jaw surgery, your orthodontist may recommend taking care of these issues before treatment.
Your First Visit
You will get panoramic x-rays of your mouth, plus a full set of x-rays of individual teeth. Photographs of your face, teeth, and mouth may also be taken. The orthodontist will take molds of your teeth.
If the space between any of your teeth is tight, rubber or metal spacers may be inserted to prepare for braces.
