A Continued Collaboration

When 3M Architectural Markets was first formed back in 2010, the close-knit group that made up the foundation of the department knew that collaboration would be a key to their success in the coming years. When they decided to showcase at ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair) in the spring of 2011, designer James Mansour was top-of-mind.

A renowned retail designer, Mansour has designed everything from stages to showrooms, some of his most famous work is on display as close as a local mall. The intimacy of Victoria's Secret stores and the log cabin elements of Abercrombie and Fitch are thanks to the creative mind of Mansour, who has received a series of awards for his impeccable work. An advocate for using lighting to its fullest potential, Mansour looks back on his early days of designing for the theatres and his love for light;

"I began my career designing for the theatrical stage where creating mood and atmosphere through the use of light was crucial to the success of every performance - light evokes emotion and sets the dramatic tone. Since then my favorite projects have been the ones where I've been able to incorporate lighting to create a glamorous atmosphere and a uniquely branded experience," said Mansour.

When 3M AM set out to launch decorative LED lighting products at NeoCon in June, Mansour's inspiring combination of texture and light made him the clear choice for designing the temporary showroom that would display the innovative lighting products perfectly.

"I was excited when 3M told me that they would like to make the lighting elements being introduced at NeoCon be the centerpiece of their exhibit. It gave me the opportunity to create a dramatic architectural backdrop for the light pieces that would incorporate either [3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes] or [3M™ Fasara™ Glass Finishes] on every single surface that was visible to our guests at the show."

The end result: a life-size jewel box covered from head-to-toe in surface and glass finishes that reflected the unique, decorative LED lighting fixtures AIR, FLEX, and Lightfalls to create a truly beautiful showroom that displayed just a few of the many possibilities with 3M Architectural Market's products. The temporary showroom was a huge success that built off the momentum from the debut of Lightfalls at WantedDesign earlier in May.

In August, the dynamic partnership between 3M Architectural Markets and Mansour will continue as he designs the first permanent showroom for 3M AM at the International Market Square in Minneapolis. The showroom will mirror not only the qualities of the booth at NeoCon, but also the creative collaboration that started as business, and has turned into a respected friendship.
