Enhancing Liquid Crystal Displays

Vikuiti™ is a new brand in 3M's innovative line of optical technologies that do amazing things with light to increase the brightness of liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Built into LCD TVs, Vikuiti™ optical films help increase the brightness of the screens, making images easier to see in different lighting conditions, such as:

  • in the family room
  • in a bedroom
  • even by a window in the daylight

Making LCD TVs brighter

Cutting-edge Vikuiti™ enhancement display technology makes LCD TVs brighter by recycling light. Some Vikuiti™ films have hundreds of reflective layers in a sheet less than 1 mil thick (or about as thick as a sheet of notebook paper)!

The films enhance the performance of LCD TVs in two ways: optimizing the angle of light and recycling unused light.

  • Most LCD TVs are illuminated with fluorescent light bulbs. Much of the light is dispersed or wasted. Vikuiti™ optical films brighten the picture by funneling the otherwise wasted light toward the TV viewer. Select the Right TV
  • LCD TVs work by first "polarizing" light, more than half of which is absorbed by the polarizing film. Vikuiti™ optical films recycle that absorbed light, making the picture brighter.
