Frequently Asked Questions

Q.

Why will 3M consider only patented ideas for new products?

A.

There are complex legal issues when dealing with the submission of ideas from people who are not employed by 3M. A Patented Idea gives 3M a better understanding of what your idea is based upon how it is described and claimed in the granted or issued patent. A patent may also give your idea greater commercial attractiveness.

Q.

If I have an unpatented idea for a new product, what should I do?

A.

3M will not consider your idea if it is not patented. 3M employees are not authorized to comment on the patentability of your idea. We urge you to talk with a patent attorney. The following sites give information on filing for patents:
United States Patent and Trademark Office
European Patent Office for patents within the European Union
Japanese Patent Office

Q.

May I submit my Patented Idea to other companies at the same time that 3M is evaluating it?

A.

Yes.

Q.

What if my Patented Idea is a technology, not a new product?
