3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material utilizes a technology known as retroreflection. This technology helps the eye perceive objects in low-light conditions when illuminated by a light source. Retroreflection occurs when light rays are returned directly to the original light source. Since very few light rays are scattered when the light is returned, retroreflective material appears brightest to an observer located near the original light source, such as light from the headlights of a vehicle back to the driver.
A law enforcement officer wearing a properly cared for, well-designed garment that includes reflective material can be seen and identified more easily by drivers at night.
