Work Wear - Law Enforcement

NLEOMF and 3M Team Up

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material are teaming up to urge motorists and police officers to exercise care on the roadways and keep America’s peace officers safe.

NLEOMF works to increase public support for law enforcement by permanently recording and appropriately commemorating the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers, and to provide information that promotes law enforcement safety.

New Federal Highway Regulation Effects Law Enforcement

3M is helping to spread the roadway safety message to law enforcement personnel, emphasizing the new Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) visibility regulation that goes into effect on November 24, 2008. This regulation, 23 CFR Part 634: Worker Visibility, requires all workers within the right-of-way of a Federal-aid highway who are exposed either to traffic or to construction equipment within the work area shall wear high-visibility safety apparel. Law enforcement personnel are included in this regulation as it covers them when directing traffic, investigating crashes, and handling lane closures, obstructed highways and disasters. Federal Highway Regulation and ANSI 207 Public Safety Vest

The new ANSI 207-2006 Public Safety Vest (PSV) standard was created in response to demand for a high visibility safety vest designed specifically for law enforcement. Due to overlapping completion dates of the 23 CFR Part 634: Worker Visibility and the ANSI 207 public safety vest standards, ANSI 207 was not included in the FHWA regulation issued on November 24, 2006.

In the 2009 MUTCD Proposed Revision, they are proposing to add the PSV as an option for incident responders and law enforcement personnel. Click here to learn more about the FWHA response.

Protect our Protectors

3M committed $25,000 to NLEOMF in support of its “Drive Safely” campaign in 2008. This campaign is a nationwide public information and awareness effort that reminds motorists to be careful around emergency vehicles and to slow down and move over when they see police officers stopped by the side of the road.
