Scotchgard™
Protective Coating Benefits

100% Adhesion
By forming a chemical bond with the emulsion, the SCOTCHGARD™ Phototool Protector solution adheres completely, eliminating delamination and air pockets, as well as cracking and flaking of the protective surface. Dust never has a chance to get between your artwork and its protective coating.

Superior Abrasion Resistance
The SCOTCHGARD™ Phototool Protection System from 3M is a cost-effective way to give your artwork superior abrasion resistance. The coating will pass a pencil hardness test (ASTM-D3363) using a 1H lead. In the following chart, higher haze values represent greater phototool abrasion (measured via modified ASTM-D968).

  % Haze
Phototool with SCOTCHGARD Phototool Protector 8.0%
Phototool with laminate* 18.6%
Unprotected Phototool (emulsion side) 61.2%
* Values may vary depending on type of film laminate

Exceptional Repellency
A SCOTCHGARD™ coated phototool repels all common solvents. It is protected from water, humidity, mold and bacteria. Even chips of photoresist picked up during printing can be easily wiped away without sticking.

Outstanding Resolution & Clarity
SCOTCHGARD™ Phototool Protector's ultra-thin, clear coating provides resolution comparable to that of an unprotected phototool. The coating is smoother than phototool emulsion, resulting in less light scatter.

  Light Scatter
Phototool with SCOTCHGARD Phototool Protector 2.1%
Unprotected Phototool (emulsion side) 4.1%

Unsurpassed Dimensional Stability & Registration
The dimensional stability of a SCOTCHGARD™ coated phototool easily exceeds industry requirements, producing an almost undetectable change in dimensions during the coating process (+0.04 mils/24 inches) and excellent registration. The coating actually minimizes dimensional changes caused by temporary fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

Improved Static Charge Reduction
Because a SCOTCHGARD™ coated phototool is more electrically conductive than either an unprotected phototool or a phototool with film laminate, it dissipates static charges faster - making it less likely to attract dust or other airborne particles.

Transmittance
The inherently clear, ultra-thin coating allows for excellent transmittance, similar to an unprotected phototool.
