History of 3M Petaluma

Optical Sciences Group (OSG) was started in 1969, in San Rafael, California, by a group of internationally known scientists working in the field of vision care. They were founded to make Fresnel lenses for severe vision problems. Press-Ons were the first product introduced in 1970. The consumer line of Vangard products was an outgrowth of Press-Ons. In January, 1982, OSG moved from their original location in San Rafael, California, 25 miles north to Petaluma.

In July of 1982, 3M purchased Optical Sciences Group (OSG), which was incorporated as the 3M Optical Systems Project. Light control film was introduced into this facility in 1983 after relocating from Blue Ash, Ohio. In addition:

  • 1992 - Brightness Enhancement Film was developed
  • 1998 - Optical Systems became a Division
  • 2004 - Advanced Light Control Film was launched

The 3M Display and Graphics Business Laboratory is also located in this facility and provides complete technical support for the design, prototype, and fabrication of products requiring accurate structured surfaces.
