Lightweight Cementing with 3M™ Glass Bubbles HGS Series
3M™ Glass Bubbles HGS Series are engineered hollow glass spheres used as density-reducing agents in oil and gas drilling fluids and cements. They are specially formulated for a high strength-to-weight ratio, allowing greater survivability under demanding downhole conditions.Low-density cement slurries made with 3M™ Glass Bubbles HGS Series offer the potential to reduce costs and improve performance compared to alternative solutions. In oil well cements, 3M glass bubbles can help reduce slurry density to below 9.2 pounds per gallon (1.08 kg/l).
Low-density slurries with 3M glass bubbles avoid the multiple staging that is commonly used in wells that require a long column of cement, and where weak exposed formations will not support the hydrostatic head during cementing. These slurries make it possible to cement deep wells in a single stage, helping save both time and expense, while reducing formation damage.

3M™ Glass Bubbles for Lightweight Cements
3M glass bubbles are engineered materials with outstanding batch-to-batch consistency. This allows for easier formulation and more accurate and predictable densities at depth. They can be used with conventional mixing and pumping equipment, and require no additional personnel or specialized training, beyond what is normally required for unmodified slurries.
Low-density slurries made with 3M glass bubbles are ideal for use in near balance, balanced or underbalanced drilling applications in:
- Depleted reservoirs
- Geologically-fractured formations
- Poorly-consolidated formations
- High-permeability formations
- Re-entry wells
- Deviated wells/horizontal wells
