Kansas Department of Revenue Surpasses Two Million Transactions

In May 2012, the Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) launched a major component of a three-year project to modernize their aging mainframe systems, which are used for driver licensing, motor vehicle titling and registration and inventory management. KDOR partnered with 3M's Motor Vehicle Systems & Services business to implement this first phase of a multiple-phase project. The project will result in a single modern system that is easier to use, maintain and enhance.

The State's vehicle title and registration system has now been in operation for seven months and has achieved an important milestone; in December, KDOR processed it's two millionth customer transaction. KDOR and their county treasurers view the new DMV system as a behind-the-counter change that will improve how services are delivered to drivers and vehicle owners throughout Kansas.

Kansas has accomplished what many states are looking to do—they have modernized their legacy Motor Vehicle Systems. And while system upgrades of this magnitude are never without challenges, Kansas has weathered the storm to become an example of what it takes to make the change. The Riley Country Treasurer, Eileen King, commented in a recent press release, "I was around the last time the motor vehicle system was replaced 25 years ago, and as you can imagine, we encountered many challenges over a long period of time moving from typewriters to mainframe computers."

With perseverance, a sense of partnership, and a common objective, the KDOR team worked diligently to reach this milestone. Kathy Tremont, Geary County Treasurer, commented, "The two million mark is a meaningful sign of progress in this once-in-two-decades conversion." With momentum on their side the project will move forward to implement the driver licensing solution in 2013.

3M would like to congratulate KDOR on a successful project and is looking forward to working with them in the next phase of the project.
