Together We Can Make it Work

Frequently Asked Questions about our Recycling Program

Q: Why should I participate?
A: For many reasons: To save landfill space an disposal costs; to contribute to the supply of raw polyester-which helps keep cost down for everyone; and to do your part to help preserve our environment.

Q: How do I participate?
A: Just ship your used 3M transparencies to our recycling partner at the following address:
3M Recycle Program
c/o Gemark
99 Stevens Lane
Exeter, PA 18643
(570)654-5511

Q: Are there any minimum or maximum quantity requirements?
A: NO. Any amount of transparency film may be recycled.

Q: Are there any requirements regarding the size of the shipment or how it is shipped?
A: Our recycling resource will accept transparency film in any form or by any method of transportation, except C.O.D.

Q: What if I have confidential information on my transparencies?
A: Our recycling resource is a secure polyester recovery company that deals with sensitive documents on a daily basis. They will work with you to ensure that your company's confidentiality needs are met. Also, you may shred your transparencies prior to sending them to the recycling resource. You can obtain a confidentiality agreement by calling (570)654-5511.

Q: What type of polyester is transparency film made of?
A: Transparency film is Type 1 polyester, the same type as soda bottles and honey containers.

Q: Since it is Type 1, can it be recycled at my local recycling center?
A: NO. Due to transparency film coatings, which allow ink and toner to adhere to the film, transparencies must be sent to a polyester recovery company to be processed and recycled into reusable polyester.

Q: Can I recycle my 3M™ Flip-Frame™ Transparency Protectors?
A: YES. Just send them to our recycling resource as you would transparency film.

Q: Can I recycle my used sheet protectors in this program?
A: NO. Most sheet protectors are made from polypropylene, not polyester. Therefore, they can't be recycled by the polyester recovery company 3M is partnered with. The following 3M products are made from polyester and can be included in the 3M Recycle Program:

  • 3M™ Flip-Frame™ Transparency Protectors(RS7110)
  • 3M™ Flip-Frame™ Transparency Protectors with Pre-View(RS7114)
  • 3M Transparency Sleeves(RS7109).
