Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why does 3M make light bulbs? +
3M has an 80 year history of light management and is known for bringing innovative products to market. With 3M's light guide technology, 3M is able to manufacture a bulb that replicates the form and function of a traditional incandescent bulb, but with all the advantages of LED technology.
2. What is a light guide? +
A light guide is a structure that captures, transports, and releases light in a controlled manner. Like the light fiber used to carry phone signals, the magic is in letting the light out where you want it!
3. What is the "pattern" that I see on the bulb surface? +
The "pattern" is actually a collection of light extraction points that let light escape in a controlled manner from the light guide.
4. How much energy do the bulbs use? +
The 60 watt equivalent bulb uses 13.5 watts. The 40 watt equivalent bulb uses 8.5 watts.
5. What does 60w or 40w equivalent mean? +
60 watt or 40 watt equivalent means that the 3M LED advanced light bulbs emit the same amount of light as traditional 60 watt and 40 watt bulbs, but without using the same amount of energy.
6. If my light fixture says "use 40w max" can I use a brighter bulb? +
3M LED advanced light bulbs use a maximum of 13.5 watts so they are safe for any open fixture that is rated for 13.5 watts or above.
7. What are lumens? +
Lumens are a measure of the brightness of the bulb. Instead of measuring brightness in energy use (40 watt, 60 watt, etc.), measuring brightness in lumens is useful for comparing bulbs with different energy use rates.
8. Do these bulbs contain mercury? +
Unlike CFLs, 3M LED advanced light bulbs contain no mercury.
9. Where is this bulb made? +
The bulb is assembled in New Ulm, Minnesota. The majority of bulb (in value) is from the United States.
10. What is the life of the bulb? +
The bulb is rated at 27,500 hours, or just over 25 years when operated an average of three hours per day.
11. Can I use the bulb in an enclosed light fixture? +
The bulb cannot be used in a fully enclosed light fixture. The fixture must have at least one opening to allow air to flow for the bulb’s heat management system to be effective.
12. Can I use the bulb outside? +
The bulb can be used outdoors with a fixture that protects the bulb from precipitation, but is not fully enclosed.
13. How do I dispose of the bulb? +
There is no mercury used in the production of the bulb. It is safe to dispose of as normal waste.
14. Why are there two "colors"? +
3M LED bulbs are available in both warm and cool color temperatures. The warm bulbs work well with earth tones often found in homes and typically can replace an incandescent bulb appearance. Warm color hues can create a space that draws you in or is more intimate. Cool bulb colors work well for task lighting or in rooms with blue color hues. This color can expand the appearance of a room or space.
