The construction of 3M Knoxville began in 1973. Production operations started in 1974 in a temporary facility on the south side of Knoxville and moved to the present site in 1975. The facility has expanded several times since 1975 with the last expansion occurring in 2007. Currently the plant occupies over a half a million sq. ft. of manufacturing and warehouse space and employs 550 employees.
3M Knoxville manufactures pressure sensitive tapes that are sold worldwide into the industrial, automotive, and construction markets. Worldwide exports from Knoxville exceed $50 million per year. Knoxville is a high-tech, multidivisional facility serving five major divisions. Knoxville is one of three 3M facilities in the state of Iowa.
