Display Enhancement Films
What are Display Enhancement Films?
3M™ Brightness Enhancement Film (BEF) and 3M™ Dual Brightness Enhancement Film (DBEF) are recycling, light management films that are used to increase the brightness of backlights used in liquid crystal displays (LCD). The brightness increase can be the primary goal or it can be translated to power savings or thermal management. 3M Enhanced Specular Reflector (ESR) can be used to increase the overall efficiency of the backlight.
Brightness Enhancement Film II (BEF II)
BEF II is a second-generation micro-replicated enhancement film that utilizes a prismatic structure to provide up to a 60% brightness gain. BEF II recycles diffuse light into the backlight and directs the light through the LCD, thereby providing increased brightness toward the viewer. A single sheet provides up to 60% increase in brightness and two sheets crossed at 90° can provide up to 120% brightness increase. This increased brightness can be translated into power savings.

Brightness Enhancement Film III (BEF III)
BEF III is a prismatic film that manages the angular output of light from the backlight. BEF III uses refraction to compress the backlights output towards an on-axis viewer. BEF III films can be used as single sheets or as two sheets crossed at 90° to each other. BEF III is available in different configurations that can be useful for specific application needs. BEF III can also be used in conjunction with DBEF and ESR.

Dual Brightness Enhancement Film (DBEF)
DBEF is a multilayer, reflective polarizer. DBEF polarizes the backlights output so that it can transmit through the liquid crystal panel. Light of the wrong polarization is recycled into the backlight. The recycled light would normally be absorbed, and lost, by the rear polarizer of the liquid crystal panel. DBEF increases both brightness and the amount of light available over the entire LCD. DBEF is available in different configurations that can be useful for specific application needs. DBEF can also be used in conjunction with BEF and ESR.

Dual Brightness Enhancement Film II (DBEF II)
DBEF II is a thin, multi-layer reflective polarizer. It features two diffuse surfaces to provide brightness enhancement and high visual quality. DBEF II can improve display efficiency, uniformity and defect hiding, and has the ability to prevent wet-out against smooth surfaces. DBEF II also allows you to eliminate a diffuser sheet and thus provides multifunctionality.

Enhanced Specular Reflector (ESR)
3M™ Enhanced Specular Reflector (ESR) is a thin film, 100% polymer reflector. ESR is used as the backlight reflector for LCD's. ESR provides ›98% reflectance, across the entire visible spectrum, to maximize the recycling efficiency of backlights for LCD's. ESR can be used in conjunction with BEF and DBEF.

Image Directing Film II (IDF II)
Many flat panel displays do not naturally transmit their images at the best angle for the viewer. Image Directing Film II (IDF II) from 3M can help. A transparent optical composite, IDF II takes the image created by your flat panel display and redirects it to the optimum viewing angle.
