History of 3M Indianapolis – Aearo Technologies LLC
The Indianapolis facility is the corporate headquarters for Aearo Technologies LLC, a 3M Company. Aearo Technologies LLC was acquired by 3M in April 2008. The name “Aearo” is a combination of the company’s two original brand names, “AO” (American Optical) and “E-A-R” (Energy Absorbing Resins).
The Indianapolis facility was built in 1977 when Cabot Corporation acquired a small research based business working with energy-absorbing foam designed to reduce noise and vibration. Later known as Cabot’s E-A-R Division, it introduced the first patented foam ear plug which continues to be the most successful product today, the Classic ear plug. During the late 1980s, Aearo Technologies continued to expand and additional production lines were added to the facility.
In 2009, a state-of-the-art Acoustic Technology Center (ATC) was built for material / product development and system / component validation to support noise and vibration control system design. The ATC has a dynamometer located inside a hemi- anechoic chamber that is capable of housing a Heavy Duty commercial vehicle (Semi- Tractor). We are able to run the vehicles up to highway speeds and evaluate our design packages for our customers.
