Featured Faculty: Gayle Chapman Anderson

Gayle Chapman Anderson is currently working in the Emergency Department at Regions Hospital in St Paul, Minnesota and is a Critical Care Instructor. A nursing graduate of Blessing-Reiman College of Nursing in Quincy, Illinois. Gayle has been a nurse for 17 yrs in which 15 years spent in ICU/ER Trauma. She relocated from Illinois to Minnesota in 1997 and started working in the Critical Care Float Pool at Abbott Northwestern Hospital till 2001. Gayle has continued working in the areas of Adult & Pediatric ICU thru Favorite Nurses Staffing Agency. She teaches Critical Care courses such as Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum, Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course, AHA courses-ACLS, ACLS-EP, PALS, and BLS at Regions EMS Education, North Memorial EMS Education, and Hennepin County EMS Education. She is a member of ENA.

Ellen Anderson Manz is currently the 3M Technical Service Specialist for topical antimicrobial products with 3M Health Care. A nursing graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, Ellen previously spent 13 years working in the OR and was OR Clinical Educator for the HealthEast Care System in St. Paul. She lectures extensively on the subject of antimicrobials, hand hygiene and patient prepping. She is a member of AORN and AORN Assembly, Industry and Consulting.

Featured Faculty: Kim Bamburg, RN, MEd, CNOR, CSPDT

Kim Bamburg is a Technical Service Specialist for 3M Healthcare. She has a Masters Degree in Educational Administration and ADN in Nursing. Kim taught in the Dallas Public System for nine years and entered the nursing profession at Dallas Methodist Medical Center where she taught the Operating Room Nurse Internship for those beginning a career in the O.R. In her current position, Kim covers a ten state geography in the Southwest and Central U.S. and lectures on sterilization and asepsis topics. Kim also served in the United States Marine Corps® for eight years.

Featured Faculty: Timothy Bellwood, CSPDT

Tim Bellwood is a Field Technical Service Specialist in Sterilization and Monitoring for 3M’s Infection Prevention Division Laboratory. As such, he conducts expert-level onsite reviews and provides educational speaker programs. He is a member of the Division’s Honor Society.

Recently, Tim celebrated his 26th anniversary with 3M, having begun his career in the Orthopedic Products Division, and has held the positions of account executive or sales trainer in the Surgical, Medical, and Infection Prevention divisions, as well.

Tim was awarded the Advocatus Emptoris Award for three consecutive years, in recognition of his outstanding achievement in the area of customer championship, which he continues to demonstrate and develop in his current role.

Since 2004, Tim has been educating customers on current sterilization practices and the important role 3M Infection Prevention products can play in the betterment of healthcare.

He lives in Columbia, Tennessee, with his wife, and enjoys three adult children and two wonderful grandsons. In his free time, Tim enjoys bicycle design and biking the Natchez Trace.

Donna Quinton Brown RN is a former CVICU manager, ACLS Instructor, Alumnus CCRN, with over 20 years of clinical experience in nursing. She has worked in Public Health, ED, Med/Surg, Telemetry, OR, ICU, CCU, and CVICU. She has been published in professional journals such as Critical Care Nurse, NTI News, AACN News, and Future Healthcare – The Journal of Medical InnovationShe has given lectures throughout the country and has spoken at NTI. For the past 15 years she has worked in medical device, home health, and laboratory industries.

Tim Chismar is currently a Technical Service Engineer and a Project Manager for the Littmann stethoscope business in the Infection Prevention Division. Tim has a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Marquette University and an MBA from Carlson School of Business at the University of Minnesota. Tim has spent over seven years at 3M in a variety of positions, including hardware and software reliability, human performance research, product and technical service for 3M's Food Protection business, product service for 3M's Sterilization and Asepsis businesses, and product development for 3M's Medical Diagnostics business.

Mark Duro is the manager of the New England Baptist Hospital Central Sterile Processing department. New England Baptist Hospital is a leader in orthopedics and is the official hospital of the Boston Celtics.

Mark has been in the sterile processing management profession for the past twenty years and is the current Vice President of the Massachusetts Chapter of Central Services professionals. Mark has been a member of IAHCSMM since 1992 and is the current chair of IAHCSMM's Orthopedic Council. He is also an IAHCSMM-approved instructor. Mark is also serves on the AAMI ST79 working group.

Susan Flynn is a Technical Service Specialist with 3M's Infection Prevention Division's Sterilization Assurance group in St. Paul, MN. She is routinely involved in troubleshooting and addressing questions about sterilization processes. Susan's role at 3M includes providing education for customers and sales personnel on improving the performance of the sterilization process and implementing best practices. Susan is a certified Central Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician and is also a member of IAHCSMM. In addition, she is a member of several AAMI working groups, writes sterilization related self-study articles, and lectures on sterilization topics at AORN, APIC, and sterile processing chapter and regional meetings.

Featured Faculty: Cynthia (Hunstiger) Hubbard, RN, BS

Cynthia is a published author and program presenter. Her nursing experience includes ER and occupational health nursing at Saint Marys Hospital Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She was Asst. Dir. of Materials Management and a Central Service Director/Sterile Processing Manager in MN and WA. Cynthia's outpatient experience includes GI, Cardiology and Community Health. For 11 years Cynthia was a Senior Consultant with Lerch Bates Hospital Group of Littleton, CO, on national and international design projects related to materials and waste management, transport and sterile processing. A graduate of Saint Marys School of Nursing, she has a BS from the College of St. Francis. Cynthia consults with hospitals on all aspects of sterile processing.

Featured Faculty: Michelle Hulse-Stevens, MD

Dr. Hulse is currently the medical director for the Infection Prevention Division at 3M. Dr Hulse obtained her MD from the University of Minnesota and completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Minnesota in 1990 and a fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Disease at the University of Washington and Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle, Washington in 1993.

After completing her fellowship she moved to Minnesota and practiced clinical pediatric infectious disease at Children's of Minnesota where she was also the Hospital Epidemiologist for 16 years and assumed responsibilities as the Medical Director for Infectious Disease/Immunology and Rheumatology in 2006. She joined the Infection Prevention Division at 3M in October 2009. She continues her clinical practice in Pediatric Infectious Disease along with her responsibilities at 3M.

Caroline Johnson is a Technical Service Specialist for 3M Health Care. She has a Bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Minnesota. She has worked in critical care at several different medical/surgical intensive care units in both California and Minnesota and is a member of AACN and APIC. In her current position, Caroline works with the perioperative team in the Infection Prevention Division.

Susan has managed healthcare central services for over 30 years. She became certified as a CRCST in 1982 then became an instructor in 1985. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration Majoring in Management with a Minor in Accounting and Economics and an Associate Degree in Labor Studies. She has been the International Association of Hospital Central Service Management (IAHCSMM) representative to Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), from 1997 to present, participating on several key standards such as ETO, Containment Devices, Steam Sterilizer, and more importantly, the ST79 Recommended Practice Comprehensive Guide to Steam Sterilization and Sterility Assurance in Health Care Facilities. Susan is currently the co-chair of the Process Challenge Device (PCD) committee. Additionally, she has authored four chapters in the sixth edition of the CRCST text book and the Steam Sterilization chapter of the seventh CRCST edition and was a contributing author in the 2010 IAHCSMM Leadership Manual. Susan is on the CRCST Self-Study Advisory Board and is the author of the Communiqué column "Inside Washington". She has lectured on sterilization topics for over ten years and she participated in the multi-society immediate use steam sterilization position paper in 2010. Susan was the recipient IAHCSMM Presidents award in 1996 and 2003 and received the IAHCSMM "Award of Honor" in 2009.

Featured Faculty: Kathleen Kohut, RN, MS, CIC, CNOR

Kathleen Kohut is an independent Infection Prevention Consultant with more than 15 years of experience in the field of infection prevention. Her clinical expertise includes maternal/child health and surgical services where she spent more than 10 years specializing in trauma and open heart surgical procedures. Her clients include major teaching universities, small community hospitals and stand alone outpatient surgicenters where she has provided consultative services to the Operating Room, Labor and Delivery, Cath Lab, and Interventional Radiology. Kathleen is the author of many continuing education courses and articles related to infection prevention and the operating room. She is the author of the "Guideline for the Elimination of Mediastinitis" published by APIC in 2008. Kathleen has been an invited speaker at local and national APIC and AORN conferences. She holds certifications in both Infection Control and Operating Room Nursing. Kathleen received her BSN from Widener University and an MS from the University of Maryland, School of Nursing. Kathleen is an active member of AORN, Sigma Theta Tau, SHEA and APIC.

For over 10 years Dorothy Larson was the voice on the end of the 1-800-441-1922 3M Healthcare Tech Line for Sterilization products. Currently Ms. Larson is a Technical Service Representative for the 3M Infection Prevention Division, St. Paul, MN. Ms. Larson spends her days solving sterilization process failures, answering technical questions, and providing technical information and documentation as requested. She is certified as a Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician and a member of IAHCSMM. Dorothy presents at seminars across the United States and has authored several published in-services.

Maret Millard is currently the 3M Technical Service Specialist for surgical clippers. Maret also works in the emergency department of Regions Hospital, a level I trauma center, in St. Paul, MN, as an Emergency Medical Technician. She is also a member of the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT). Maret is an author and speaker for the 3M Infection Prevention Division in the areas of Perioperative and Patient Assessment. She has also written a number of articles for publication in Managing Infection Control.

Mario Perella is a Field Technical Specialist with the Infection Prevention Division of 3M Healthcare. He provides general technical support for 3M Sterilization Assurance, Environmental Hygiene and Asepsis Products for the Northeast Region of the United States. Mario has taught orthopedic splinting and casting at educational events on behalf of 3M for the last 23 years and is also an annual guest faculty presenter at numerous Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant Programs throughout the country. Mario recently became CS certified and has expanded his role to include Sterilization Assurance Education.

Jodi Rohr is a Technical Service Specialist for 3M Infection Prevention Division for surgical skin prepping products. She earned her ADN from Inver Hills Community College and her BSN from Metropolitan State University, where she is also a graduate student in nursing. Previously Jodi worked at Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare's operating room and was the OR Education Specialist. She is a member of AORN and MOLN and has been actively involved with The Credentialing and Competency Institute.

Cheron is certified and an instructor for IAHCSMM and currently is the Sterile Processing Education Coordinator at Children’s Hospital of Central California, Madera, CA, as well as, the Education Director for CCSA, California Central Service Association.

Featured Faculty: Maryke Schmidt, BS, CSPDT

Maryke Schmidt is a Technical Service Specialist for the 3M Infection Prevention Division. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Oberlin College. Maryke has worked at 3M for 30 years in a variety of areas. The first half of her career was spent in the laboratory working on development of new materials for use in contact lens and absorbable polymer materials for use in sutures. During the second half, she worked in the area of new product development for sterilization monitoring chemical indicators and products for cleaning and decontamination of medical instruments. She also supervised the St. Paul-based 3M Infection Prevention Sterilization Technical Service group.

In her current job assignment, Maryke is a Field Technical Service Specialist for the Infection Prevention Division and is based out of Southern California. She provides general technical service support and education for all 3M Infection Prevention products.

Rose is the President/CEO of Seavey Healthcare Consulting, Inc, and formerly the Director of the Sterile Processing Department at The Children's Hospital of Denver. Ms Seavey was elected to the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Board of Directors for 2008-2010. She was honored with AORN's award for Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Nurse Education in 2001. Rose served as the President of the American Society of Healthcare Central Service Professionals ASHCSP) in 2003 and is the 2002 recipient of ASHCSP National Educator of the Year award. Rose was selected as one of the Who's Who in Infection Prevention in 2006 by Infection Control Today.

Ms Seavey was selected for the AAMI National Nominating Committee for 2011-2014 and is a member of several AAMI working group committees that are developing recommended practices. Rose is a co-chair for the ANSI/AAMI Working Group for Hospital Steam Sterilizers performance standards. In addition she has lectured and authored many articles on various topics relating to perioperative services and sterile processing, locally, nationally and internationally.

Sarah Sholes is currently a Technical Consultant for the Monitoring Solutions of the Infection Prevention Division of 3M. Specifically, she provides technical support for the Atlantic and Southeast regions for solutions related to Hygiene Management, Electrode Monitoring, Sterilization & Hand Hygiene. Sarah is a Certified as a Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician and is a member of IAHCSM and AORN. Her previous work experience includes nearly 20 years in healthcare including sales, management and training in the pharmaceutical and medical supply /device industries.

Greg Skorczewski is currently a Technical Specialist in the 3M Infection Prevention Division Laboratory. He attended the U.S. Army Academy of Health Sciences and served in the Army Medical Corps. Greg is a former operating room nurse and a Board Certified Orthopedic Physician's Assistant. Greg has worked at the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, Hennepin County Medical Center and Metropolitan Orthopedic Associates in Minneapolis, MN. Greg has over 15 years experience which encompassed a broad range of responsibilities in diverse clinical settings both as a nurse and a physician extender. The diversity of his experience gives him a comprehensive understanding of healthcare and of a wide range of related technologies.

Featured Faculty: Terri Sontheimer RN, BSN, CNOR, CRNFA

Terri is a Technical Consultant for 3M Healthcare. She holds a BA in Biology from Benedictine College and a BS in Nursing from the University of Kansas. Prior to entering the nursing field she worked in the Analytical Chemistry division of Midwest Research Institute implementing studies in ultra trace organics and trace metals labs on projects for contacted agencies.

After graduating from nursing school she worked in Surgery at Olathe Medical Center where she was the Orthopedic and Cardiothoracic Resource Nurse as well as earned her CNOR and CRNFA. After 18 years in the OR, Terri continues to practice as a member of the Olathe Medical Center Heart Team.

She has taught Endoscopic Vein Harvesting techniques to Doctors, Nurses, and physician assistants with Guidant Corporation before joining 3M.

Before joining the Technical Consultants team, Terri was a Clinical Specialist and a Territory Manager in the Southwest Region.

Terri works in the North Central and Midwest Regions of the country and speaks on a variety of topics including sterilization and asepsis.

Inma Soria received a BS degree in Pharmacy from the University of Madrid, Spain, a PhD in Pharmaceutics, with a collateral field in Statistics, from the University of Minnesota, and has over 19 years of experience in the Medical Device and Pharmaceutical Industries. After completing her doctorate she worked for 2 years in the Medical Device industry and 13 years in the Pharmaceutical Industry, at 3M, where she held increasing levels of responsibilities in the clinical research area. Inma then moved to the Medical Device area within 3M, where she has been for the past 4 years. Her current position is Manager of Technical Service and Clinical Affairs at the Infection Prevention Division of 3M.

Cynthia is an independent consultant with more than 30 years of experience in surgical services. In addition to working in healthcare facilities Cynthia worked as an international clinical consultant for Advanced Sterilization Products for 12.5 years. Cynthia is a member of APIC, IAHCSMM and AORN where she was a past national president. She has authored over 100 publications and two nursing texts. She has presented seminars around the globe on a variety of healthcare related topics. Cynthia is a member of several AAMI Working Groups writing and updating recommended practices, including co-chairing the committee responsible for the ST79 Comprehensive Guide to Steam Sterilization and Sterility Assurance in Health Care Facilities.

Larry Talapa has over 20 years of experience in the area of sterilization and is currently a Technical Service Specialist in 3M's Infection Prevention Division. Larry has extensive experience as a Sterilization Engineer, responsible for the development and validation of ethylene oxide, steam, irradiation and gas plasma sterilization processes. Larry is a member of several AAMI working groups and is also a member of MHCSMA and IAHCSMM.

Grace has 15 years experience in microbiology research and product development for the pharmaceutical, medical device and chemical industries. As an expert in microbial identification and strain tracking, Grace was a frequent speaker at national and international conferences. She was also an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin – River Falls for nine years, teaching microbiology and running a research program in Environmental Microbiology. Currently Grace is a Technical Service Specialist for the 3M Infection Prevention Division.

Sandra Velte is one of the voices at the end of the 3M Sterilization Techline, 1-800-441-1922 (option 2). In this role, she answers technical questions about 3M products, troubleshoots sterilization process failures, and provides information related to sterilization best practices. Sandra's role at 3M also includes providing education for customers via live seminars, online webinars, and published articles. Sandra is a member of the Minnesota Healthcare Central Service Members Association (MHCSMA) and the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) and is a certified Central Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician.

Craig Wallace is a Senior Technical Specialist with 3M Health Care's Infection Prevention Division Laboratory in St. Paul, MN. He has over 15 years of experience in research and development and technical support in the field of sterilization and disinfection. He has presented seminars on sterilization related topics in the US, Europe, and Asia. He is currently a member of several AAMI sterilization working groups, including groups focused on biological indicators, chemical indicators, and industrial sterilization.

Plate products within the Infection Prevention Division. Jeff has a BS in Electronics Engineering Technology from DeVry and a MS in Software Engineering from the University of St. Thomas. Jeff has over 20 years experience working in the cardiology medical device industry with the last 14 years at the Medtronic's Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management Division. There he specialized in implantable electrodes, automated test system development, electrochemistry, corrosion and high voltage dielectric testing.

Martha is president of Martha L. Young, LLC, providing SAVVY sterilization solutions to healthcare manufacturers and healthcare facilities, and is a consultant for 3M. She recently retired from the 3M Infection Prevention Division, St. Paul, MN after 31 years and has over thirty years of experience in the area of sterilization and disinfection. Ms. Young has lectured around the world; has numerous publications on infection prevention with an emphasis on how to improve the performance of the sterilization process; is a technical advisor for healthVIE.com (formerly Managing Infection Control), and writes a quarterly column for OR Manager. She is a member of IAHCSMM, AORN (Past Professional/Practice Issues Chair for AORN Speciality Assembly for Sterilization Processing and Materials Management from 2006-2010), APIC and is a certified Central Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician. Additionally, Ms. Young is a member of several AAMI working groups developing recommended practices. In 2007, HPN acknowledged her as one of the '30 Pros Worth Knowing' who are the Most Influential in Healthcare Sterile Processing.

Featured Faculty: Francis A. Zieman, RN, BSN, MS, CSPDT

Francis Zieman has been involved in the Healthcare Industry for over 36 years. He has been licensed as a Registered Nurse since 1976 and practiced in surgical and trauma settings. His last nursing assignment was as Nurse Manager of the Trauma Center at the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile. During his tenure, the Trauma Center earned a Level 1 designation and developed a Life Flight Service based at the University Hospital. Mr. Zieman taught at the University campus in the EMT program and acted as a preceptor for the BS Nursing program at the University. He has been with the Medical Division of 3M Company since 1985. He is currently assigned to the 3M Laboratory providing Field Technical Service for the Medical Division in the Southeast Region of the United States and speaks on a variety of topics in Asepsis and Sterilization. Mr. Zieman is credentialed by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, is licensed as a Registered Nurse by the State of Alabama.

Featured Faculty: Rose Seavey, RN, MBA, BS, CNOR, CRCST, CSPDT

Rose is the President/CEO of Seavey Healthcare Consulting, Inc, and formerly the Director of the Sterile Processing Department at The Children's Hospital of Denver. Ms Seavey was elected to the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Board of Directors for 2008-2010. She was honored with AORN's award for Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Nurse Education in 2001. Rose served as the President of the American Society of Healthcare Central Service Professionals ASHCSP) in 2003 and is the 2002 recipient of ASHCSP National Educator of the Year award. Rose was selected as one of the Who's Who in Infection Prevention in 2006 by Infection Control Today.

Ms Seavey was selected for the AAMI National Nominating Committee for 2011-2014 and is a member of several AAMI working group committees that are developing recommended practices. Rose is a co-chair for the ANSI/AAMI Working Group for Hospital Steam Sterilizers performance standards. In addition she has lectured and authored many articles on various topics relating to perioperative services and sterile processing, locally, nationally and internationally.

Featured Faculty: Cynthia Spry, RN, MA, MS, CNOR, CSIT

Cynthia is an independent consultant with more than 30 years of experience in surgical services. In addition to working in healthcare facilities Cynthia worked as an international clinical consultant for Advanced Sterilization Products for 12.5 years. Cynthia is a member of APIC, IAHCSMM and AORN where she was a past national president. She has authored over 100 publications and two nursing texts. She has presented seminars around the globe on a variety of healthcare related topics. Cynthia is a member of several AAMI Working Groups writing and updating recommended practices, including co-chairing the committee responsible for the ST79 Comprehensive Guide to Steam Sterilization and Sterility Assurance in Health Care Facilities.

Featured Faculty: Martha Young, BS, MS, CSPDT

Martha is president of Martha L. Young, LLC, providing SAVVY sterilization solutions to healthcare manufacturers and healthcare facilities, and is a consultant for 3M. She recently retired from the 3M Infection Prevention Division, St. Paul, MN after 31 years and has over thirty years of experience in the area of sterilization and disinfection. Ms. Young has lectured around the world; has numerous publications on infection prevention with an emphasis on how to improve the performance of the sterilization process; is a technical advisor for healthVIE.com (formerly Managing Infection Control), and writes a quarterly column for OR Manager. She is a member of IAHCSMM, AORN (Past Professional/Practice Issues Chair for AORN Speciality Assembly for Sterilization Processing and Materials Management from 2006-2010), APIC and is a certified Central Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician. Additionally, Ms. Young is a member of several AAMI working groups developing recommended practices. In 2007, HPN acknowledged her as one of the '30 Pros Worth Knowing' who are the Most Influential in Healthcare Sterile Processing.

Featured Faculty: Francis Zieman, RN, BSN, MS, CSPDT

Francis Zieman has been involved in the Healthcare Industry for over 36 years. He has been licensed as a Registered Nurse since 1976 and practiced in surgical and trauma settings. His last nursing assignment was as Nurse Manager of the Trauma Center at the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile. During his tenure, the Trauma Center earned a Level 1 designation and developed a Life Flight Service based at the University Hospital. Mr. Zieman taught at the University campus in the EMT program and acted as a preceptor for the BS Nursing program at the University. He has been with the Medical Division of 3M Company since 1985. He is currently assigned to the 3M Laboratory providing Field Technical Service for the Medical Division in the Southeast Region of the United States and speaks on a variety of topics in Asepsis and Sterilization. Mr. Zieman is credentialed by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, is licensed as a Registered Nurse by the State of Alabama.
