Newly-published AAMI guidelines ST79:2006 Section 10 now recommend that all loads containing implants should be monitored with a process challenge device (PCD) containing both a BI and a Class 5 Integrating Integrator, or a PCD containing a BI and an enzyme-only indicator.
The problem is, most conventional BIs require long incubation times – up to 48 hours, in some cases. And when things get busy, it just isn’t practical to wait that long to release every load.
To address this problem, 3M recently introduced the 3M™ Attest™ Rapid 5 Steam Plus Test Pack. It contains a fast-acting biological indicator that provides results in just 3 hours – making it practical to include a BI challenge in every load, as recommended in ST79.
The Rapid 5 test pack also includes a 3M™ Comply™ SteriGage™ Class 5 Integrating Indicator. This delivers an immediate Accept/Reject reading so, under emergency conditions as defined in ST79, loads can be released with less risk.
By cutting down the waiting time as much as 88% over conventional BIs, the Rapid 5 Test Pack makes it practical to run a BI challenge with every load, and thus simplifies compliance with ST79. It can also be used for periodic product testing and sterilizer qualification testing, to get equipment back up and running faster.
