Infection Prevention

Patient Prepping
Since many of the microorganisms responsible for SSI reside on the patient's own skin, preoperative skin preparation serves as a front-line defense against surgical site infection. One goal of SSI risk reduction is to decrease the bacteria count on the skin prior to any procedure while minimizing the potential for skin damage.

Body hair removal and antimicrobial skin prepping are two elements of the preoperative skin preparation process. The 3M Infection Prevention System includes products ideally suited to meet this goal.

Rigorous adherence to the principles of asepsis is the foundation of surgical site infection prevention. It is critical to minimize a patient's exposure to bacterial contamination from members of the surgical team and from non-sterile equipment in the operating room through the use of gloves, gowns, masks, and drapes.

Draping of the surgical site provides a sterile work surface and helps minimize the transfer of microorganisms between non-sterile areas and the surgical wound.

These measures also help protect health care professionals from exposure to pathogens in the patient's blood and other body fluids.

We have surgical drapes for: Cardiovascular/Cardiac Catheterization, Equipment, General, Incise Drapes - Antimicrobial, Incise Drapes - Clear, Labor and Delivery, Ophthalmic Procedures, and Orthopedic Procedures.

Why is Perioperative Process important?
CDC: Intraoperative Recommendations for Surgical Attire and Drapes: Use surgical gowns and drapes that are effective barriers when wet (i.e., materials that resist liquid penetration).
