3M's Transthermal Backing permits heat to escape faster: Older grounding pad technology uses foam as the backing material of choice. Unfortunately, foam locks in heat. The 3M Universal Electrosurgical Pad employs a Transthermal backing material similar to that of surgical drapes, letting heat escape 25% faster than foam. Excessive heat buildup in tissue can lead to patient injury (Electrosurgical burns).
