History of 3M Hutchinson

Just after World War II, the community leaders of Hutchinson began discussing the issue of how best to use the local hemp facility since it was no longer needed by the U.S. Government. Their search led them to St. Paul where they persuaded 3M to buy the plant. 3M started production in Hutchinson on February 12, 1947, producing the world famous "Scotch" Brand Cellophane Tape.

Since then 3M has continued to grow at the Hutchinson site by adding a wide variety of consumer, office, industrial and electrical tapes, as well as display and graphics films. On December 19, 1956, 3M began producing magnetic media tape at its newly built plant adjacent to the Tape Plant. This was the first of numerous site expansions and renovations to keep pace with the rapidly growing world demand for tape.

After exiting the Videocassette and Professional Audio/Video business in November 1995, 3M merged the two plants under Tape Manufacturing Division (TMD), creating the single largest 3M manufacturing site in the USA. 3M Hutchinson has added several new product lines to our site including Post-it® Flags, Pop-up Tape, Pharmaceutical Adhesives, High Performance Tapes, ScotchBlue™ Painter's Tape, and display and optical film coatings. 3M Hutchinson also added a Tape Development Coater and a High Precision Clean Coaters to accelerate the rate of our new product introductions and to advance technology in tape and related products manufacturing.

In 2005, we had a site building expansion and added manufacturing capability for ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape to support the growth of this business. The project enabled the two plants on site to physically be linked into one continuous building. We also celebrated the 75th anniversary of Scotch™ Transparent Tape, the first product that was made in Hutchinson.

Since 2007, the facility has added investments in additional high precision clean manufacturing technology and capacity as well as continued growth in our core Consumer and Office, Industrial and Electrical Businesses. We have also added manufacturing capability for Command™ Strips, Nexcare™ Bandages and Filtrete™ Filters to support growth of these businesses.

The combination of a well established, diversified product base, numerous high potential new product lines, world-class employees and strong community support has positioned 3M Hutchinson for continued success in the future.
