Interoperable data

Meaningful use. Meaningful data. Meaningful care.

Meaningful data improves patient care, clinical decisions, operating efficiency, and research opportunities. Yet electronic data in an EHR comes from multiple sources and in a variety of standards and terminologies, such as LOINC®, SNOMED CT®, CPT®, and ICD classifications. The medical vocabularies, codes, terms and patient IDs originating in one system may mean something different—or nothing at all—in another.

Fortunately, 3M can help. 3M offers a service-oriented architecture (SOA) approach to help organizations:

  • Map, translate and standardize patient data
  • Accurately match persons and patient data
  • Keep vocabulary standards and terminologies current
  • Implement a plan for long-term data interoperability
  • Facilitate access to lifetime patient records

With more than 20 years of medical informatics experience in integrating patient and clinical data across diverse systems, 3M offers technology that makes clinical information available for meaningful use in decision making, research and quality improvement.

Make your data actionable and meaningful

3M™ Healthcare Data Dictionary (HDD)

The 3M HDD, a controlled medical vocabulary server, has been continuously expanded and maintained for over 15 years. It provides a road map to the content and structure of patient data by defining and translating every data element and healthcare concept that occurs in a computerized patient record. It offers a practical, comprehensive implementation of industry-standard vocabularies across all domains, including ICD-9, ICD-10, General Equivalence Mappings (GEMs), SNOMED CT®, LOINC®, RxNORM and more.

3M™ Terminology Consulting Services

Achieving true data interoperability requires an ongoing commitment to sustaining terminology best practices. The 3M team of industry-recognized medical informaticists supports 3M clients with expert terminology and data mapping services.
