3M™ APR DRG Software
Account for severity and risk among all patients
So many variables affect how sick patients are, how quickly they will recover and how many resources are needed to effectively treat them. 3M can help you better understand these variables for all patients, including children, maternity and commercial insurance enrollees.
The 3M™ All Patient Refined DRG (APR DRG) Classification System is widely used throughout the United States for adjusting data for severity of illness (SOI) and risk of mortality (ROM). Public and commercial organizations in more than thirty states use the 3M APR DRG methodology for payment or public quality reporting.

3M APR DRGs are an extension of the basic DRG structure that includes four SOI levels and four ROM levels within each DRG. The software assigns patients to severity and mortality subclasses according to a sophisticated clinical logic that evaluates co-morbidities, age, procedures, and principal diagnosis. Unlike the CMS DRGs, which focus on the Medicare population, the 3M APR DRGs reflect the complete cross-section of patients seen in an acute care setting.
Features and benefits
Links payment to expected costs
3M APR DRG Software improves the accuracy of pricing and reimbursement by capturing differences in severity of illness among patients. Sophisticated logic groups patients into clinically comparable categories where they would be expected to use similar resources and experience similar outcomes.
Supports quality initiatives
By adjusting for severity and risk, the 3M APR DRG Software creates a common measurement across disparate patient types. It can be used to identify and predict potential quality problems, such as readmissions and complications, and how to improve them.
Improves accuracy of public quality reporting
3M APR DRGs provide a clinically-based severity-measurement system that offers precise metrics on the clinical complexity of patient populations. That's why patient safety organizations such as
U.S. News and World Report rely on it to measure and report hospital performance and outcomes.
Supports Cost Management
3M APR DRGs provide a powerful benchmarking and cost management tool to better understand resource utilization according to clinically stable categories allowing for variation and benchmarking analysis along service lines, providers, sites or diagnoses.
