Potential Uses
When planning the lighting for a new build or remodeling project‚ consider the following uses and venues for 3M™ HL High Luminance Light Fiber:
- Use as a complement to cold cathode (e.g.‚ neon) or LED chip strips where high durability is required‚ physical contact is possible and easy illuminator replacement is desired.
- Use where people could come in contact with the light source such as displays‚ venues and way-finding applications. Light fiber passes only light‚ not heat‚ nor electricity.
- Use where high durability is required such as exteriors in high-wind areas or areas where vandalism may occur. Light fiber will not shatter like glass or discharge environmentally-hazardous gases.
- Use where a low voltage Class II light source is required or desired. Most LED-based illuminators are Class II devices and cost less to install‚ require less energy‚ can be safer to use and may lower insurance costs.
- Use where color changing is required or desired. Some LED and most metal halide-based illuminators offer color changing features which can be set to random or controlled modes‚ ensuring the desired light/color effect is achieved. Additional controllers (DMX) can be purchased to add additional control.
- Use light fiber where an easy-to-replace light source is required or desired. The fiber illuminator can be isolated or located in an area that’s out of sight and yet easy to access if it needs to be changed. The ability to hide the light source increases the attractiveness of the overall visual appearance.
- Use where a visually-clean appearance is needed. 3M™ HL High Luminance light fiber doesn’t have segment-to-segment interconnect wiring like some LED chip strips. Light fiber systems also lack the standoffs‚ wire and blacked-out tubing found in cold cathode (e.g.‚ neon) solutions.
- Use where cold cathode (e.g.‚ neon) or LED chip strip solutions may be too bright. Light Fiber can be used where a more subtle or pastel-type illumination is desired. Selecting a specific illuminator matched to the length of fiber provides the ability to adjust brightness. Adjustment ability also allows users to match brightness on fiber runs of varying lengths.
- Use where low-heat or electricity-free lighting is required or desired such as applications where people might come in contact with the fiber.
- Use where low-power consumption is required or desired. Light-emitting diode-based light sources consume less power than cold cathode lighting and can last up to five years.
- Use where low maintenance is required or desired. Light fiber illuminators can be placed in easy-to-reach locations where replacement is quick and easy. Light-emitting diode (LED) illuminators can last up to 5 years without replacement.
